Farmers Daughter Finds 22 Egg Nest

Our Aberdeen North Camp owner told me yesterday that his daughter was out checking cows when she came upon and pheasant nest that counted 22 eggs in it. I alsed him is that was a record for him and he said "yep". He has lived there his whole. He said since I was pheasant expert  I should know if that meant good year or not. I replied with a "?????".

I suspect 2 hens laid eggs in that nest and job shared. Any true to this hunch?

Well back to planting food plots. 90 degrees last 2 days. Perfect for hatching pheasants.

Wow if thats one hen she will be a busy moma.

Ever hear of "dump nests" that are never actually sat upon? I hear that they exist and often have lots of eggs laid in them. Not sure of the rationale, but I have heard this.

I know that penned pheasant hens will lay 50-100 eggs.
I can see some problems with that many eggs in one nest. A hen pheasant isn't big enough to incubate that many. If she switches around on the nest she may not become a parent.:(

Chick sightings reported

Talked to that farmer who had the 22 egg nest and he said he mentioned it to Game and Fish guy who said "it was a dump nest and hens don't sit on them they just lay eggs there". I guess ducks will lay in pheasant nests and vice versa. The farmer didn't think that was case as he had seen a hen sitting on the nest several times.

In any case the guys that planted my trees reported seeing pheasant chicks (down south SD) and also this farmer near Aberdeen. Also reported was a lot of cover and said it would be hard to tell how many chicks are out there.

Was out this weekend...things very green, pretty lush. Saw lots of birds, no chicks though. Several locals had seen chicks...heard of maybe 7-9 different broods having been seen, including one hen sitting on a highway who got up to reveal a brood of about 8-10 chicks that had been under her....probably hotter there than other spots. I did see one hen who was playing injured, so she must have had a brood nearby. Finally warmed up in the last couple of days. Hope it stays that way! Had 5 local farm families over for supper saturday night...made country style ribs, grilled over indirect heat for quite a while, then wrapped them in foil for another 90 minutes...then painted them with famous daves "rich and sassy" sauce which had been customized with vinegar, lemon juice, and a bit of hot sauce...the ribs were awesome! Did some bacon wrapped shrimp marinated in western dressing (grilled), as well as grilled asparagus in olive oil, and, potatoes with onions, carrots, and red peppers (foil wrapped with butter and pepper and lipton onion soup mix)....and, plenty of cold beer! Was an outstanding evening...went til midnight, used the weber kettle as a firepit...memorable night, no bugs, great temps, awesome sunset!!!! Gotta do more of it....

BB,

Sounds like a typical great SD time. Also sounds like a great idea for new show on Food Network or Outdoor Channel. Pheasant Hunting and Social Cooking Right After. Or as Ted Nugent would call it, "Killin' and Grillin'".
