Energy treats

I know that most will wait to feed their dog until the hunt is over but was wondering if you do any "treats" during the hunt to keep energy levels up? Had seen someone talk about giving their dog a caramel intermittently while hunting. If so, what do you do?

Tried to use the energy bars for dogs but it really upset there stomachs, won't due that anymore. Just give mine ( springers) dog bones, water.

I find a few bites of my turkey sandwich much appreciated!! And sometimes just a regular old dog biscuit---if he will eat it.

treats

i carry a couple of cheap hotdogs for treats. they can't spoil, most aren't any good to begin with, they stink, dogs love em' and don't ever seem too tired to eat one of them. cheap too. have yet to have a dog die one me so they must be working

cheers

I have done several things in the past. A cup full of their regular dog food while in the field, a dog biscuit plan or with peanut butter on it, a chunk of my sandwich ,peanut butter and jelly, turkey, ham, steak, or pressed meat of sometype they really dont care what it is.

I keep a payday in my vest and give the dogs a bite during extended trips or if its really cold out.

man i love payday's

So do the dogs and I and as an added bonus if some gets stuck in their teeth they put on a pretty good show doing summer saults and pawing their head trying to dislodge it.:D

I've used Nature Valley Sweet and Salty Peanut bars for years...both hunters and dogs get them. They work great with water to keep you going. SAMs Club in bulk.

treats

I bought some of the K9 Restart Energy Bars and fed them at field trials but I can't really say I can tell that they did anything.

did the dogs share any of them with you? i think on really hard runs, the big dogs do or hunting long days several days in a row, the dogs need some kind of a boots but like us, by the time our candy bar has hit bottom we are sound asleep, they should have been eaten the day before

cheers

Wal Mart brand Oats and Honey granola bars and goose jerky are always in my vest. Dog and I both like them.

I make my own from a recipe I found. 1 cup cooked rice, 1 lb ground beef, 1/2 cup regular table sugar and I added some shredded carrots (maybe one big one or two small ones) and their juice. Add a whole egg for binder, make into small (ping pong or golf ball sized) meatballs, cook until done, cool and then I vacuum pack about 4 to a pack and refreeze them... take a pack out every day we go. Dog loves em - and easy on the digestion for him..

Many people say it does no good... but after 4 years I have had no down side... - and if I have any left at the end of the day I top dress his post hunting meal with em.
