End Of The Season

Hey all, well, another season gone. It was a good one, not great, but good, for me, at least

This last month, we had some goofy weather. Freezing rain, high winds, snow, and drifting snow and temps from 50 to below zero (sometimes from day to day). Seems we had a new system every week.

Bird numbers were about the same as last year. Hope they'll be better next season.

I myself was out for about a month, went out for a hunt, slipped on a patch of ice, and cracked a rib! Today, I did get out. It was a beautiful day. Birds were wild as all get out! Addie did manage to pin one down, so I did get one last bird

Addie is turning into an excellent bird. Very happy with her!

Anyway, thank you Lord and St Hubert for a good season!

So....how did you fair this year

Used my 16ga Ugartechea today

Stay well my friends

Greg

I had the best season of my life. Dog is prime time aged 5. He loves to hunt more than I do. Made my first ever trip to ND 9now only 3 of the 50 states left to visit) shot some birds and saw some vistas and big territory.

Killed more birds this year in IN/IL than ever. Saw more birds. Just wish I could have gotten out more. My hunting buddies are getting up there and cannot do it as much as I can at age 62.

Had good weather for most hunts, good people and nobody got shot!

Sorry about that. Type error. Thanks for all the post. This season was the worst I have ever seen. Might have been the warm weather crops in the field not many birds or all of them. I have done this for over fifty years the worst I have seen. I still have two really good setters and my best friend has two really good shorthairs. Last year in addition to pheasant we saw several hundred Sharptails over the course of five days and probably about 25 to 30 coveys of Huns. This year one and I mean one Sharptail and two coveys of Huns in addition to very, very few pheasant. The time and money to travel from Georgia 1500 miles just doesn’t add up anymore. I have seen great seasons and bad seasons, this one was beyond bad. Sorry for the sour grapes just the way it is. After wild bird hunting my entire life I think I need just to stay on the golf course. I am grateful for all the memories. Just sorry it had to end this way. You guys take care and I wish you all a good season next year and all the very best. For me I think it’s time to hang it up. Best to all!

P.S. guys if anyone read this and had great hunts not a jealous bone in my body. I hunted great private ground that was really good in past and put the miles in every day. Just very disappointing. I guess that is my sign right. I guess all good things come to an end sometimes. Take care

Sorry to hear…I get it. On another forum, can’t recall which, there’s a member who has a quote under his name..something to the effect, “It’s a good thing that most bird hunters don’t realize the last time they’ve been afield with dog and gun”…something like that…but, maybe there are cases when a guy is aware, and maybe it’s ok? 🍻

Thanks for the nice quotes banger.! All the years I have hunted it was never about body count it was about great dog work and making memories with great friends. That said we used to consider anything less than 25 or 30 birds a rather mediocre hunt. I go with two other guys I have hunted with for 40 years. This year it was a sad trip home for the three of us. It did something to me. Now I just can’t justify making those trips anymore. Maybe I will change my mind next fall but I doubt it. It was that bad. Yeah I think it’s time. Thanks for the kind words.

Life is a cycle…I think of a line from a Dylan tune, “He not busy bein’ born is busy dyin’”…(It’s alright Ma, I’m only bleedin). I lost both my parents in the past 5 months, I’ve got an old dog that I need to retire, my daughter is due in July, my youngest turns 27 this May…I’m getting older, people my age are getting sick, dying, etc…Father time always wins, eventually. Former hunting friend, 15 years my senior, has dementia, will not be hunting much more. Things change. You’re a good guy, this saddens me, I feel for you and your dogs. There was likely a weather event where you hunt…much hail in a large swath of ND in July, I believe. That’s a big trek, for sure, I get the issues….my best to you! 🍻☀️👍

What you say is all true for the last 17 months I battled a real bad case of prostate cancer. Before I left I wasn’t sure if it would be the last time I could experience the glory of the west. I guess it all worked out. I had a full body Pet Scan a few days before Christmas and I got the news on Christmas Eve I was cancer free. Yeah I think it’s time I focus more on my wife and family instead of so many hunting trips. As I said I think that was my sign. And because of my Lord and Savior Jesus I am still here. Many people are so less fortunate. Thanks again for all the kind words.
