Dove Hunt

dove story

Tell us the story!
first off i believed that i was hunting on land that my friend had permission and the rancher didn't give a hoot as long as the cows were not there, the warden tried to tell me that was not good enough, i reminded him it was legally none of his business cause without a signed complaint it was out of his hands, he got nasty. i was then accused of going too fast down a farm road, non of his business, trying to allude him, at that point didn't even know he was in the area, and shooting dove in the direction of the road which i didn't and he was only in a position to hear the shot but could not see me nor the truck. i reminded him that studies show that a very major reason people quit hunting is cause of the complex laws are not understandable and the rotten attitude of the wardens. he said he was just doing his job, i said you didn't hear me did you? never a high, how ya doing, why don't you try it over there, nothing, just accusations, kinda got me pissed. he said he had warned me for the last time about trespassing and i told him he had to legal reason to warn me the first time, he walked back to his truck. there were two of them, a great pair spreading ill will for the state of colorado. oh well, got a new aya 28 ga. i hope coming tomorrow just in time for the weather change and all the birds gone to texas

cheers

That is unfortunate that you had that experience. I know that game wardens vary state to state. In Kansas, the guys I have come across are pretty good, in Texas where I was born and raised, they are good ole boys. However in Colorado, some of these fellows are WBE (wet behind the ears) and haven't a clue. That being I had the field officer from the Lamar area call me, think his name is Jordan, on the phone he sounded like an older gentleman, called me back Friday night after I had called and left a message. I was trying to inquire about some SWA's areas and the dove reports from opening weekend. He was very nice, gave me some good info.

As long as you are legal, then you are good. It is the attitude that always rubs me the wrong way.

There has been a good amount of Public outrage at the current Administration. I think there image is at the forefront and at a all time low. They have been hiring people that do not care for hunting and lack people skills. For the most part I have been lucky only to run into a few nimrods. I was checked 2 years ago 8 times on the same or adjacent property. I told them to quit harassing me unless you see me do something wrong. Finally when they saw it was me when they walked up , they just said " Oh it's you" and did not check my license for the upteenth time! They knew it was me before they walked into the area. Since then, I have yet to run across one. There have been some really good ones out there, but they must of transfered out! I think the worst is during Big game season when all the people from Denver get to go out in the woods and help out. Best to just steer clear. Had 6 of them check me and a friend on a dove hunt just east of Denver. All green!!!!! One had a rubber hose with a line around it wanting to check plugs. My buddy handed him his O/U and said have fun with that one! About then his dog coughed up number 31!! I said write that damn lab up!

game wardens

one must be careful how wide a brush he uses on this subject but for me it is really rare that one is pleasant, helpful or otherwise non threatening, one of my best friends from college was a WCO and since then they have gone down hill. to them everybody is a suspect and they tend to treat you that way, gone seems to be hi, how ya doing, having any luck, anyway, moving on, hope this weather while i like it, hope the dove can put up with it for a few more days, got a new bird gun in the mail, just gotta go use it.

cheers

went dove hunting about 44 miles east of town this morning, got 8 and would have limited out thenif I had not forgotten my shooting glasses. Can not hardly shoot with out them once it gets bright out, I have glaucoma and I am really sensitive to light.
Walked back to the truck and got my sunglasses and finished up my limit in a little while.

i'm thankful you are not still standing next to the mail box waiting to go and that you brought a gun that worked at least 15 times.

cheers

dove stuff

finally with a break in the weather and no floods in sight i took my new gun for a walk. been waiting about a week, it's a aya 28 ga. first dove, first shot, dead dove, the 2nd one was lucky and then the gun broke. that was this morning, this afternoon cabela's has another one on the way, but yet, another week or so. bummer

Sorry to hear about your gun breaking :( Glad you were able to shoot it at least and get one before it broke. Good to hear that they have another on the way.....

The gun broke? What happened? That can't be normal for an aya right?

broke gun

shouldn't be normal, shouldn't be what 4 grand gets you either. actually i am not pxxxxx'd at anybody or anything. the gun ejected the shells and the ejectors were properly times, that is both shell landed close together in the weeds. i inserted two new shells, closed the gun and the forearm fell off. i have been using double guns for over 40 years, never did that before but then that's what the farmer said when his horse dropped dead. never did that before. somehow the ejectors did not cock or slipped, the cocking mech. is in the forearm and if the ejectors are released you can't put the forearm back on and they are nearly impossible to cock without the proper tool, the question i have is why the release and if i got them recocked would it happen again and then you have a possible warranty problem with aya. didn't make sense and even though i confused the manager of the gun library in colorado he was smart enough not to touch it and ordered a new one. surely in another week there will be no dove left if in fact there are any now. bummer to have a new toy and can't play with it

cheers

duv stuff

have all you guy's stopped hunting dove, anybody know if any of them are still in the northern half of the state. plan on going tomorrow to the brush area, mostly to let my dogs run more than likley

cheers

I hunted Brush up to Sterling right before the big rains and did not get or see many birds but had a great time anyway.

I was not planning on trying it again up there, but if you see some birds please let me know and I will give it another shot.

Am thinking about trying it towards Lamar or Pueblo but have never been there and don't really know any areas. Anyone have any ideas in that part of the world?

Thanks,

long drive

if you are in the denver area, lamar is a long drive, there is public land down there and surely there are more dove in that general area then we almost ever have in say the brush area. as it is a crop area, there are trees and water, can't beat the combo. good luck

cheers

some more dove

just got back from a little dove excursion. saw about 90 and shot my limit, still kinda warm for the dogs but they did get to run some, shot one double but made up for it on a couple of others. no other hunters
