Dogs unleashed in the back of a truck

How many see this every year?

I just about loose my mind when I see this. Years ago, I lived right along 35W south of the twin cities. A guy was going by our place at Hwy speed and two Black Labs jumped out and onto the concrete, sliding for 100s of feet before coming to rest. Ever since I witnessed that. I want to get out and whoop the guy(s) I see doing this but EVERY hunting season I witness this again and again.

How do you all feel about this subject?
 
I agree, it is a horrible practice and one I consider unresponsible of the owner/driver.

That said, I must admit that I do this practice on a VERY limited basis. My old Chessie loves to ride loose in the back when I am in my cowpasture. Speeds are only 3-5 mph but I still keep a close eye on her!

Oh boy.. I'll probably get verbally spanked good for this, but I do it and have done it for a few decades. My dogs literally go EVERYWHERE with me. They ride on the ATV, the flatbed, or in the bed of my pickup. Even had a few that rode behind the saddle horseback.... They would take me off of their christmas card list if I left 'em home... I've never killed or seriously injured a single dog by allowing it. But I introduce them to it early, as puppies, and they become accustomed. It's a part of life with me and they love it. I don't ever recall one falling out twice..;) they learn real quick. :)
 
I call it Stupid utterly STUPID. I don't even like to see dogs hanging half way out of a window. A sudden stop and you have an injured dog. I have to much compasion for my animals to subject them to this type of stupid injury.........Bob
 
i see LOTs of dogs in the back of a truck.. even one likes to lay on the tool box and doesnt move even when in motion. its not humane but if a dog is wanting to JUMP out and the owner acknowledge this and doesnt do anything.. should be reported and taken care of. my pup rides in the front with me... and when she gets bigger, shes probably gonna still ride in the front with me even during hunting.
 
A dog belongs in a crate, box, or belted in - period. It is unsafe for them and the driver to do otherwise. Slam on the breaks to avoid a deer and they're going to be in the windshield. HUGE distraction (I dare say more so than a cell phone) to have them on the front seat.

I would enjoy my dog riding on the front seat with me, but I know better.
 
Years ago a friend of mine, who made deliveries in a 2 1/2 ton flat bed dump truck, used to take his dog Rufus everywhere in the back. One day while going downhill he looked in the mirror after hitting a large bump. Well Rufus was rolling down the street. He said it looked like parts and pieces were falling off dear old Rufus. By the time he got stopped, turned around and back to the boy Ruf had collected himself and wasn't sure if it was his pride or body that was hurt the most. Seems those parts and pieces was last nights dinner as Rufus had lost bowel control at the critical moment. :eek:

Rufus rode up front on the way back to the shop. :rolleyes:

One time we were up in voyageur's National park on the Minnesota/Canadian boarder. We were in Prince Williams narrows. There were a lot of boats traveling in both directions coming to and from Sandpoint lake. We see this big boat screaming along at about 40 plus MPH with a Black Lab in the very front of the bow, kinda like the gal on Titanic when she hangs over the front of the ship. All of a son they hit a big wake from another boat and the Lab was thrown 10-15ft in the air. He bounced about three times as he hit the water. It took the guy a good distance to come to a stop. Mind you, there was a ton of boat traffic in these narrows. Instead of going back to get his dog. He makes him swim the 100yards or so to the boat. Meanwhile there's boats blowing by the dog right and left. We just sat and thought to ourselves, we sure hope the dog makes it back to the boat without being hit, besides if he's alright from being flung 15ft in the air and bouncing on the water.

Fact is, some folks just shouldn't own pets of any kind..no matter what

I love my dogs as much as anyone here, and they love the life they live. I refuse to stoop to name calling.. :)
 
Ohhh! don't even get me started on this one.:mad:

Where is the common sense here. People obviously don't take into account the consequences. It's an accident waiting to happen and completely irresponsible of the owner to let it happen.

OK keep it civil people:D We all love our dogs. I personaly wouldn't do it because I know mine would not stay put. I had a dog once that jumped out, going about 40 miles an hr. He was in the front seat. The guy with me opened the door just to see if he would jump out, as I yelled no you ideot to my, no longer hunting partner, the dog bailed. He went skidding down the gravel tumbling. The dog was fine. But could have been hurt easily. After a gun butt, a sock to the chin and a long walk home. That guy never was in a car or hunted with me ever again.

I have let my dogs loose in the back of my truck for short distances but i also have a topper on my truck. 90% of the time they are in their kennels. I don't like seeing dogs with their heads out windows either, heard too many stories of them getting sand in their eyes from it. Put your hand out the window when driving around where theres traffic, you can usually feel sand and crap, or turn off the radio and listen to the stuff hitting the windsheild, same stuff hitting your dog in the face. Dogs are animals and are unpredictable, owners need to take measures to keep them safe when traveling even if it's not what the dog may like. It would be same as letting your kids sit in the front seat with no seat belt on, not smart or safe even though they may like it (I'll probably take some heat for that one). Have a safe hunting season.

When my kids were small before seat belts. I would buy a Harness that fastened to the back of the seat. They could stand or sit and they rather enjoyed it. I sure felt better having the knowledge they were safe........Bob

Just like a car seat for a child. I love my dogs as much as my kids...Plus I have lots of time and $ in them. (same as the kids):cheers:

yea, I don't wear my seatbelt either... :)
 
not very often do my dogs ride in the truck without bieng crated but when they do man do they love it and never on the highway or at speeds over 20 usually just for a sunday drive around town or to go do some spottting
