Dog trainers

I was not planning on sending Oxford off to a trainer. I think he has been coming along nicely, even with a novice like me trying to train him. I realized this morning I am going to be traveling out of the state for more than half the month in August. I started thinking that it makes sense to send Ox to a trainer for the month instead of to a dog boarder for half a month. I would really like him to get work on birds, which I have not been able to do with him. I recognize that August is probably the worst month to be at a trainer.

I was wondering if any of you had good suggestions of trainers. Or see major flaws in my plan?

Btw Ox is 10 months old.
 
Check with Jim Gourley located in Beverly, Kansas. Close enough to you for you to visit frequently. 785-249-4316. He's trained several pups I've produced for their owners.
 
Good Idea. I did the same thing about three years ago with one of my shorthairs and it was great. I think in the end I actually spent less money on a two week training course than I would have spent to board my dog at the local vet clinic for the same amount of time.

I used K and L kennels in Higginsville, MO. They work mostly with labs but do work with pointing breeds as well. You can do an internet search and find them.

At the time they offered a special two week basic puppy program and will progress with the dog as far as you want or as much as the dog is ready for.

Anyway money well spent, they did a good job and it sure beats just paying for boarding.
 
Your thinking on this is very sound. Ox will get some addtional bird work, rather than sitting in a crate while you are going. Whats not to like about that plan.

Thanks for the info folks. I talked to Jim this evening, and I am going to try and talk to Russ tomorrow. Any one else have suggestion?
 
Terry Adams in council grove at pheasant run kennels. Great guy and great trainer as well. He's been doing it for over thirty years. I have had both mine trained there and am very happy with the results. 620-767-6218 is his number.
