Dog names and tributes

I have a hunting buddy who just purchased a puppy from me. He has hunted over all of my Golden's and his favorite was my first dog named Ruby. Ruby was a small 45# budle of energy who never quit in the field. Fast forward a few years. I kept a pup I named Roxy out of Ruby. I kept a pup Reba out of Roxy. Reba had a litter and my buddy purchased a pup out of her litter and asked if he could name that dog Ruby! I said absolutely, I am honored he is going to keep those memories alive. Looking forward to hunting over that girl in the years to come. By the way I also have a pup from Reba, her name is Randi. Yes I know "R's" but I like a name you can yell in the field. Anybody else have a particular dog name that has sentimental value to you? How do you name your dogs?

I have/had a Reina, Raven and Roxy, Rassafras and Rachen. The boys names were all over. So the R take the cake.

I have a field bred English Cocker to pick up on Saturday, going to name her Tippet. She might be tipping me over the threshold at almost 75. A tribute to me.

Country western songs/artists have become my go to.

First male black lab was the Man in Black, Cash.

Current black lab female is Ready to Run, Dixie (Dixie Chicks) and (female yellow lab) Right on the Money, AJ (Alan Jackson).

And I’m hoping for a puppy in the Spring out of AJ that will tie together the band Rascal Flatts and their song Mayberry. Maybe call name May? Time will tell.

Old west gunfighters real or fictional. Current dogs, Dutch, Ty, and Doc (Doc was born November 5).

In order, all Britts -- Duchess, Dakota (male), Lady, Frankie, Bandit, Dakota (female), Bear, Kate, Rocky, Reece.

Duchess was my first, 1982, thought it sounded Brittany.
Bear is now 15 and sadly, doesn't have much time left.

Seems like our family just starts throwing names out there and pick one that fits.

Diamond-a Golden that had a white diamond in her forehead when we first saw her.
Champ- a large very muscular Golden that seemed to be built like a prize fighter.
Annie- our Springer thats just as sweet as can be.
Jaxson- our current Golden, well, just liked the name I guess. Although w his personality he gets called a lot of names. Most arent board appropriate!!!

That's always a conversation in our house. The last three have been Tess (RIP), Scout, and Trace. Trace is named after Buffalo Trace, one of my favorite poisons. I've always wanted to name a dog Switch (for switchgrass) or Blaze (for Blaze Orange), but I get outvoted. My wife likes names that are at least passable as names for humans.

All of mine have a law or outlaw theme. Ive had, Bandit, Judge ,Sherriff,Trigger, Train, Big nose Kate, Nelli, Pistol, Bullet, Maverick, Annie, Ranger, Josey, Clyde.Ive had a few.

Stella’s Midnight Star, named after the proprietor (Stella, played by Linda Hunt) of the saloon (Midnight Star) in the film Silverado.

My dad took me to see Silverado in the theatre when it came out in the 80’s. It is one of the first movies I remember seeing in a theatre, and still one of my favorite westerns ever.

Last year we were sitting around the card table at the outfitters we go to every year. My dog was a year old and on her first trip to SD. Anyway, the discussion came up that our host had recently purchased an interest in a casino in Deadwood that was previously owned by Kevin Costner. (Costner played Jake in Silverado) The name of the casino is The Midnight Star.

Sport, Gus, Butch, Maggie, and Jen, all Brittanys. Gus, Maggie, and Jen were rescues with names which I stuck with.

My Labs name is Dre and the next dog I get will be named Marshall (Eminem). My wife's choices. We are both 90s and early 2000s rap fans.

Jax is doing really well! We dont have to beg him to go outside but do have to beg him to come in! He's a ball of fire! Did some grousin up north and have made 1 SD trip so far. He's doing well. Trying to plan my next trip out there soon. IA as well. Life is short..

Britts - Nellie, Brooke, Nellie (in honor of the brit i grew up with), Belle (half sister to Nellie 8wks apart), Kaci (name after a niece), Bella (let my son name), Remi (short for Remington).
Labs - Jazi (no rational there), Elli (wife named her)
Setter - River (we live by two world class trout rivers). Wife wanted to call her Rivers from My Dog Skip and she does at times.

Never rally had a method for figuring out the call name for my dogs, just what ever seemed to fit and family like as well. Registered name has their call, kennel and parents typically.

My last Golden was named Goose. She was a good dog and good enough hunter. I don't recall how we came up with that name and no it wasn't from Top Gun. My current Golden is Stella. Wife and I agreed to it for no particular reason. Shes two and coming on strong. We will be hunting Iowa again starting tomorrow afternoon.

I am a single dog guy, it wasn't until about 15 years ago, I needed to get my own, as family and friends were out of dogs. Kind of open on names, just needs to be a single syllable....Dude and now Gus.

I've had an Ike, Jake and a Taz. Currently have a Jax and a Duke. Taz was a rescue and the grandson of Rawhides Clown. Typical Clown dog in the fact that he had a screw loose, thus the name Taz as in Tasmanian Devil. He was a hunting machine. Jax is my best hunter and Duke is the best retrieving GSP I've had but Taz was special. Pics probably in my early posts years ago. But his memory lives on.
