Dog Food Recall

this never seems to stop, i guess it is due to the proliferation of so many new dog food producers?
i remember when there was about 5-6 brands and life was simple. Now there is so much bullshit in advertising
and designer feeds, grain free, potato free, etc.

However I do believe in feeding grain free kibble. Although many folks still gravitate to some time honored, well known, dog food that uses corn and corn by products. Some brands offer grain and grain free. Always good to have a choice and see how your own dogs assimilate their food. I am looking at Victor and considering it as a new food source as well.........

Not sure if this is what he was referring to or not: https://www.petfoodindustry.com/topics/253-pet-food-recalls

In regards to marketing, it is what it is. They all want you to think their brand / recipe is the best. Regarding grains in dog food, regardless of whether you choose to feed a grain free feed or not, grains do serve a useful purpose in dog food. There not just "fillers" they are an excellent secondary source of calories, fiber and energy in the form of carbohydrates. Not all dogs have grain allergies either, in fact more dogs are likely to be allergic to a meat source rather than grains. Now... having said all that I'm not saying grains should be the predominant ingredient in any particular feed either. I've always believed meat source should far and away be the predominant ingredient in any dog food.

birdshooter I followed your link,,, at the bottom there was a story about blue buffalo selling for 8 billion. How many furbabbies does it take to eat 8,000,000,000 in dog food anyway, dang that's a lot of kibble. That's like 56 billion in dog money.

I hunt with a guy who is all about a meat based dog food.

Don't know if it correlated but his dog takes about four tries before he can finish a bowel movement. I think they need grains for the fiber. Maybe a good food has enough fiber of some other sort.

My dogs always got the cheapest in the farm supply store. They hardly stop running to go.

When I was a kid our family raised dogs. Mother made her own food in a big pot in the basement. Man that stuff smelled good.

So what's with the Recall??

pentobarbital contamination in dog food. recent recalls for mostly off brand canned food and treats.
this is a euthanasia drug used to put down sick or dying animals of all kinds....which then get collected by the production facility and rendered into pet food products.

for instance, BB out souces it's production to something like 6 plants across the US. They have had 6 dog food recalls since 2007, so quality control is an issue for them. The last recall I can find for them is March of 2017. They have good ingredients, but they certainly have quality control issues.

my comment about grain are regarding excessive amounts in kibble. If corn or potatoes are 2nd or 3rd on the bag label, that is excessive.
i am feeding a dog, not raising a steer.

just a heads up, keep an eye on your dog year round, be on the look out for changes in behavior or lethargic moods.

Nothing wrong with grains for the vast majority of our four legged friends. But there are a few that do have some food allergies. My 1 1/2 year old Brittany appears to have some allergies we have yet been able to get to the bottom of. I have been feeding her a grain free limited ingredient dog food. A few months ago I switched her to Zignature dog food https://www.zignature.com/?page_id=5&lang=en I'm feeding the pork formula (31% protein & 18% fat). She really likes the food and seems to be doing very well on it. If you want to a grain free and limited ingredient diet take a look at Zignature.

There's also an ingredient high in fiber used in many feeds that many would simply think is filler and that is Beet pulp. Very high in fiber. Keeps your pooch regular ... :)

We all have choices. You be the judge. Dog Food Reviews & Ratings dogfoodadvisor.com

You have to take what's printed on that website with a grain of salt. literally... They are very biased on what they deem as a 5 star food.

Example: Take Pro Plan Sport, they give it a 2 and a half stars out of 5. There are literally hundreds, heck thousands of breeders, trainers, hunters or people in the field trial games that feed Pro Plan and have for a long time and there dogs thrive on it. Just because Purina sponsors many of those trials, I would have to believe that if anyone of them thought Pro Plan was not cutting the mustard and they could do better in regards to energy, coat condition, muscle tone or overall general health they'd look elsewhere and wouldn't feed it regardless. So.... again take the info on this site with a grain of salt.

Purina has been around for ages. I use to feed Purina Hi Pro back in the late 80's. It was the highest rated protein available from them @ 28%. #1 source of protein was corn. I stuck with Purina for years, way before they were on the bag with breeder endorsements, etc. Some call this good advertisement & marketing. The same can be said about the "show" dog shows on TV, endorsed by another brand. There are far more manufacturers out there today & that web site is independent viewing of all brands make up, ranging from 1-5 stars. They do state that other factors than ingredients plays a key roll in the rating. If, a person takes the time to review their brands make-up & chooses to stay or switch, so be it.

Point taken. I just want to reiterate again that while that website has a lot of information it doesn't and can't determine if or what feed YOUR dog will do well on. That is purely trial and error, and what we've seen is that while one feed works for one dog it may not for another. There are plenty of dogs that do well on food that they have rated lower(below 3 stars).

Do not put a lot of faith in what Dog Food Advisor says. You will notice that the grain free and organic foods all receive high ratings. And yet ProPlan only gets like 2.5 stars, yet ProPlan Sport is fed to the vast majority of hunting and field trial dogs and they do great.
