I have harped on this in the past. Now it seems people of power are starting to listen and evidence is coming in. 14 dogs dead at a shooting preserve near Brooten MN. The owner has a law suit against the land CO. They now have come up with a spray that will target and kill the Canada wild Rye I was told from them, they are going to spray all there land. As said before don't let this stuff be planted on your land. These dogs were all Labs and Shorthairs.

How do these seeds harm dogs? Thank you.
 
It is put in as a cover crop in new plantings, etc. The seeds have awns on them that burrow like a porcupine quill. Leaving a trail of infection. The seed keeps traveling in one direction, going through any tissue. Including vital organs. A very slow painful bullet so to speak. It can go in any orifice of the body, eyes nose mouth even through the skin. Up the manhood, or eaten. essfta.com click "Grass Awn Project"

There is a few habitat projects on state land near me where they have planted tall grass and wild rye was in the seed mix.
I have talked to a few people that were hunting there what to look for and to check there dogs after the hunt. Most hunters I have talked to have never heard of it.
 
I was looking at some of the seed mixes available from PF and found it interesting that so many of them contain the Canadian wild rye. I always think of PF as being ahead of the crowd, but in this case it seems they might be missing the boat?
 
I avoid that stuff like the plague..... and cheatgrass too!
 
You have to hunt the cheat to find the chuckars.
 
I just had to have a bunch of tiny 'foxtails' removed from my dog. I mean these were hair thin, maybe 1/64" at the fat end and 1/4" to 3/8" long. Is this cheatgrass? Nasty stuff. Does it grow much in California?

I can't say my dog has ever had a problem with cheat grass but it sounds like what your dog picked up. Cheat is fairly common as it was imported for grazing lands in the foothills and high desert areas. I do know that those chukar love the stuff.
 
I stand corrected, it wasn't introduced for range land it just invaded them as it is very intrusive. Do you groom your dogs, short hair, poodled paws, etc? I have found this really helps in my dogs maintenance.
 
Having a new pup that will be going out this year I have to admit I am a little concerned I have no clue what to look for as this is my first hunting dog. I groom him on a regular basis but any help on as to what I am looking for as I do it would be helpful. And anyone that hunts Colorado is this a major concern in the public WIHA?

By November it wont be a problem in Colorado, It is training in the summer time that when they can pick it up, right now the head is drying and not a good time to be running the dog through the grass were it is present.

I'm afraid I'm guilty there. I've always cut there ears and feet, even a full summer clip, but got a bit lax this time. Apparently cheat grass is what I'm referring to as common foxtail. What he picked up was tiny, about 1/10th the size as a common foxtail.

Trust me it makes no differance if your dog is trimmed or not. I like mine trimed, easier to maintain and cooler, at least early season. It also is just as deadly in the late fall as in the summer. It hangs on a long time. Most likely will be ingested, inhaled, the nose, or through the skin.If they eat it, which my dogs do eat grass from time to time, your in trouble. It is easily identified once you are familar with it. PF need to go on a eradication program is what they need to do along with the USDA, instead they still leave that crap in many of there mixes. People will start to believe this when more dead dogs pile up.

Familarize your self with these seeds and hunt elsewhere.

Also that preserve, turns out that the planting co was told to leave it out in a custom mix, hence the liability. Several dogs were client dogs. And sad to say the spray was not new and did not work....

Go to meanseeds.com the new web site for it. It will have more added to it for each case that comes in. If anyone has a procedure done, "please" ! save samples and vet records and get them to me and I will get them to where they need to go. After enough people are on board it will hopefully be enough to get them to stop the use of these plants, at least on public ground. People who own there own and can do what they choose. Just get the word out and it will come to pass in time, but for now its a problem to be dealt with.
