Well, as bad as I hate think about it, my old dog will be 9 this coming year. Sadly, she will be the last dog I will be training on mainly wild quail. So, as I'm contemplating a pup in a few years, the thought a cured to me that I really no longer need a dog that covers a bunch of ground. With wild birds all but gone here, all I really do is shoot some flare nares and chuckers and a couple trips to pheasant land yearly. I know I'm asking a lot but I'd like a breed that stays 40 yards or so in cover but stretches to 100 when needed. No bigger than 50 lbs. I also want an above average nose and biddable in the house with limited shedding, Grouse hunting lines from the great north? Brit? I've never owned a flusher, but the thought is intriguing. Longer coats won't work here because of the burs. I think I know the answer but what say you guys??
 
Small Munsterlander…just do your homework before you decide on one. They are head strong but the one I have is a machine and smart as a whip. Retrieves very well, points, and tracks.

They are people dogs and kind of latch on to one person. They want to be inside with people and would be miserable in kennel or out in a yard every day.

But like I said, just make sure you do your homework. There is a guy in South Dakota that breeds them and I would maybe start with him. (Julson I think?)

Munsterlander has a long coat. OP is looking for a breed with a short one.

How about a vizsla? They seem to be smaller dogs and have short coats.
 
Haha yeah, that is what some of the breeders of different breeds would harp on about SM’s when I was trying to decide on what to get. He does get cockleburs in the long hair behind his legs, tail and ears but he will remove them himself everywhere except his ears. Just a suggestion they check all of the other boxes.
 
I have been looking at pudelpointers for some of this and they don’t shed much but you’d have to find one on the small end.
 
I have a 40-45 lbs Llewelyn setter. She is 2.5 points solid, retrieves, good in the house. I’ve shot over 100 roosters so far this season between 4 states. She has been rock solid on marking and bringing them back. I can only recall a few she did not come back with. She’s the best dog I’ve ever hunted with, I am a bit partial. We’re working on quail. I’m heading to Arizona in a couple days. I do have her shaved short about 4 times per year. Ticks in the spring, summer heat, then twice in the fall. That really cuts down on shedding, burrs and such. I would not think twice about getting another one. A little pricey for some maybe but like most things you get what you pay for.

Yeah, a setter is near the top of my list. Finding a closer one might be tough.
 
I would seriously consider a Pudelpointer. Mine fits all of your requirements except size. She comes in right at 60 but it’s a small 60 as she is pure muscle. The shedding is there but you barely notice it as it is minimal compared to most breeds. The drive is insane, and she will hunt any distance you want depending on cover. Strong retriever including water, not quite to good lab level, but close. Powerful nose and good stamina. Lovable dog that is great with kids and strangers. The only issue I have had with her is a little food aggression around other dogs. She also has some dogs she likes and some she doesn’t. Typically other females. Drawback is her beard and furnishings are magnets to anything that sticks.

She's a beauty, but yeah, a little to fuzzy for here. I've seen quail nerds and pics of others that are shorter coated, so not out of the question.
 
Not a fan of the weird breed name dogs. Pudel pointer? Who came up with this? Sounds like a take a piss in the house breed. Viszla? Not sure I even spelled it right. Sounds like an onion variety. Munsterland? Come on, gotta be a cheese. How bout Master Hunter? Would you pick that breed? Fetching Loyals? Birdbringer? Also why in the hell do some bird dogs have a short tail? Makes no sense. It’s the only thing you can see in the cover! You heard it hear first. New LTP breed . That’s right, Long Tail Pointer.
 
Vizsla checks the boxes, I have only seen 1 that might break the 50 lbs. mark.
Brits are cool but they can have big wheels and the coat is pretty long
Field bred cocker? Pretty scarce and have long hair
Tollers suck, cant hunt, and have long hair :)

I like the Vizlas looks. I never knew most are close! The wire haired ones are cool but I bet hard to find.
