Can dog food make a big difference?

This is the first full week on my new brand of dog food after making the transition to it. I took one of my pointers out for a few hours this afternoon and my god he was running like a banshee!

Can the food make a very noticeable difference in a dogs hunting in your opinion? He kept this up until I picked him up at the last spot and headed home.

If your talking about going from a maintenance type formula to a performance formula than I will say yes it can make a difference. However, switching over to a higher protein/fat feed should ideally be done 5-6 weeks before the hunting season starts for the dog to fully benefit.

If your switching from one brand to another with the same fat/protein %, then look closer at the calorie content. Usually this will be on the bag listed as KCal/cup. The denser food will have a higher calorie content e.g 375 kcal's vs 450 kcals, even if they are the same protein/fat %.

Note: Sometimes the calories are listed as KCal ME / kg or KCal ME / Lb. Either way, the higher the number the higher the calories.

Nope, I feed 26/16 yr round. Good point on the calorie content I'll need to look at that again, I can't remember what it was for sure now.

What I used to feed is 429 and what I feed now is 368. Considerable difference in calories. Both 26/16 though.

I have had times where during hunting season I have trouble keeping weight on my two.

Me too even on hi protein/ fat food, they just can't eat enough so I supplement with fried eggs, or a double cheese burger on extended hunting trips or rough weather.
