Awh the joys of hunting with a spaniel.

I heard some guys spray their dog with Pam cooking spray. Sounds awful dirt collecting to me.

A tip from an old field trialer, use mane-and -tail conditioner on the feathers, ears, and undercarriage before you go. A large comb will pull those out pronto, without tearing out hair. They even sell it here in the shampoo aisle at the grocery store. A little more trouble but less at the end! If you flub up and get them any way, do it at home, let it sit there, mostly they still come out easy. Lots of time the burrs will not attach in the field with it applied.

I heard that yesterday from a guy and I am headed to the feed store NOW and thanks

I'm going to give it a try as well. Between my 4 springers I must have pulled a wheel barrow full of burrs off of them.:(

trim

the long hair / feathering can be trimmed before hunting season.
This minimizes the over time work of removin burrs.

I trim my Golden back and use cheap hair conditioner and water in a spray bottle - works well and conditions his coat. I use this stuff to groom/brush the dog; hair seems to come out easier, especially the under fuzz.
