Broken Toe Nail

My 11 mo old GSP broke a toe nail on her back foot last night. There is maybe 5% of the base of the nail left. Its basically completely broken off. It was bleeding last night pretty good but I cleaned it with some gauze and used some dog wound treatment on her that seemed to stop the bleeding. I had to cut the rest of the nail off with some clippers because it was just barely hangin on. So far I have her foot covered with a sock but she hates it. Anyone have experience with this? Approximately how long does it take a dogs toenail to heal? Ive never had this happen to a dog of mine before.

Super glue. It sounds bizzare but it's an old field trial trick, and it works! Seals it off to prevent infection and gives a solid base to run on. If it breaks off, do it again.

Ive heard of using super glue to glue wounds together. But Ive seen it done where the skin next to the wound is what gets the glue. The skin is then pinched together so the glue doesnt actually get on the tissue itself. Im just scared to get a bunch of glue on her open wound. It sounds painful

Wondering if the nail will ever grow back. ITs broken right where the nail comes out of the skin. If you pull the skin back you can still see some nail... but not much.

They make a gel for human use, "new skin", basically it's just super glue with a new package. It hurts too! But certainly better than infection or dirt. If nothing else, use furazone spray aerosol, it will at least disinfect it and pretty much retard any infection. It was used in Vietnam, on humans, now considered a cancer causing agent. I works too! But you can't eat your dog for at least 21 days after usage. also use alum blood stop to get dry, and quit oozing, it will quit the licking too, that will be a problem as well.

I will throw this out there for general info, but I don't think this is what you described as the break you are dealing with.

If you get a nail that breaks right at the skin line or cuticle, brace yourself first (meaning to screw your courage up tight!), grip it firmly from side to side with something like gauze or even a paper towel, and while having someone hold the dog firmly to keep them from biting, grasp the leg near the foot with the other hand and YANK it completely off quickly and firmly! Most dogs will tolerate this and it is quick when done properly. It will grow back in almost all cases. (I never saw one that did not in forty years but I did not see them all.) I would apply betadine solution to the toe and bandage for a few days 2-5. Just enough to stop the blood getting on things. With a split nail that is split all the way to the cuticle wiggle it a bit to losen it and do the same thing. It is rare IMO that a nail breaks half off. Super glue can and does work sometimes as well. Millimeters make a difference sometimes. Keeping the nails shortened will really help to prevent broken nails.
