Boots!

Hi everyone from Marysville,Washington!Hope you all are having a fun safe season chasing birds with your Brittanies,we hunted eastern washington for two weeks and now are resting up to start duck and goose hunting on Puget Sound.Im still looking for the perfect dog boots! Any of you find them yet?My two 7 year old britts Hunter and Max would appreciate anything you can share on this as we spend about 70 days hunting each year.

I use Lucky Dog suede boots in a small for my 38 pound springer and med for my 48 pound springer. I get them from Dobbs Dog supplies on the internet. They have velcro straps but I also use duct tape and wrap the tops to make sure they stay on. Use them while Chukar hunting here in Calif. John

Welcome to UPH, it nice to have a fellow Washingtonian on the forum.....Bob

Thanks guys for your info on boots! We wore holes thru two sets of neoprene boots from Avery in three hours down in the Columbia basin on opening day and they had swelling from chaffing from the boots on their legs.I'll try the baby socks I put on them when I medicate their paw wounds.

Time is that relentless hunter who eventually takes us all, just as it does our dogs. So my hunter's prayer is that when it's my turn to pass through that veil to the other side, my faithful hunting dogs will be patiently waiting for my return with their tails wagging to experience endless days afield.

Hey, have any of you guys used pad heal?I saw this in a dog supply store in Wenatchee a couple weeks ago. They talked it up pretty big but I stuck with a bottle of Blue Kote. Here it is http://www.cleanrun.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=product.display&Product_ID=1491&ParentCat=208

Btw... I like your signature.

No I haven't Is it good? I have seen it over the years and meant to check it out but a vet got me started on the Blue Kote for my wirehair when I was hunting chukar 18 years ago (by the way I don't chase chukar up in the hills anymore I just shoot them when I see them, my dogs and I hold many personal grudges against the little maniacs!)

I think a couple other guys here have tried it and have recommended it to others though.

The only boots that have ever performed well on my Brittanys are Lewis Vented Rubber Dog boots. My Brits take size large on the front and medium on the rear. You buy Johnson & Johnson stretch adhesive gauze tape and wrap that around the dog's ankle including the stopper, then put the boot on, making sure the top of the boot is against the gauze for padding, not the dog; secure the boot to the dog with duct tape. On the front boots you will need to cut off some of the top of the boot at the rear so that the boot does not contact the dog's stopper.

Try dresslers dog supply in kansas city KS ask for Denise. I got mine for my brits there. I use the Cordura / Velco type with a little sports tape to help hold'em. They last good and are easy to operate. Field tested and proven.

Also a great book for Brittany owners and owners
of all dogs is " The Rufus Croniciles by Charles Gusewelle. He is a hunt /author and the owner of the sire dog for my Ellie May Run Brittany. Attached is a article from the Kansas City Star who he writes for.

Thanks for the information! I 'll check it out.Btw I enjoyed the article I have a tough time leaving one of my britts in the truck so they can take turns hunting the one thats left behind anywhere howls his head off...I would like to get to that point of hunting one in the mornng and one in the afternoon so I always have a fresh rested dog.

Thank You!

More boot input

We run our dog in boots too - and go through a lot of them. The Avery neoprene ones are inexpensive, but don't last long. They do seem to do better against snow because they're taller but we tape them on also. We have had the best luck with the Deluxe Dog Boots from the Ugly Dog Hunting catalog - they have a zipper and velcro and are sized a little wide which fits our dog's monster paws. Also have tried the Ruff Wear brand which are actually built more like a human hiking boot. They hold up really well against rock and sharp objects, but fit low on the ankle so they can get sucked off in muck. One nice thing about them is that you can order just one if you need a replacement and they also have socks that go with - they have their own website. Another tip I have is that a friend of ours who runs sled dogs and goes through boots by the dozen uses www.dogbooties.com for cheap one- or two-use boots.
We also started with Musher's Secret this season using it on paws a few days before and every day during the hunt which seems to help.
Good luck!
