Had several males whistleing around the farm here and when I whistle back, they might respond once and then they pretty much shut up. Any ideas as to why? My whistle is pretty good, just got me curious as to why they wont talk back much.

Maybe they are a shy sub-species. :p

If you are giving a male "Bob white" whistle you are competing with him for a mate. Try the female "white" whistle. Bet the conversation lasts longer :)

Maynard,

Great post. I've had the pleasure of meeting Dr Rollins a few years back. A treasure and legend in his efforts.

I agree. I've become quite good a mimicking Ca quail except for their alert "pip". One time I was sitting in a draw taking a break and calling to a covey on the hill. Next thing I know I can hear two guys coming up the draw saying "You hear them? They're right up there." Lol. I guess my whistle is pretty convincing. I stood up to make my presence known. The guys didn't have a dog so I offered to let them follow me to the covey on the hill. Ends up my dog helped get one of the guys his first quail, he was very grateful.
