blizzard could be bad....

Just stopped snowing in NE South Dakota, about 8 inches of snow with lots of wind out of the NE. Went out walking the shelterbelt and flushed 4 roosters which was a great sign. Birds were dug in to the snow in a thicket of lilacs. SD viking

a good month or so....maybe earlier if conditions permitted, but it would have to warm up and dry out a lot...I talked to a guy who lives out in SD and who owns lots of land for pheasant hunting...he doesn't think this one poses much risk for the birds...

This stuff should melt pretty quick. The only problem is at this time of year the birds have depleted a considerable amount of their fat reserves over the rest of the winter already. Meaning it could be very impactful in certain areas where birds get covered up. Also with this wind it could easily blow snow over their nostrils and freeze them shut, this leading to death. Lots of blowing for a couple of days is not a good thing at all.

Turned out to be a one-day deal, and not quite as bad as originally forecast. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the impact to our birds was minimal.

I am 35 miles west of Aberdeen. It missed us, Selby got some but the worst was the south half of the state, Hiway 14 and south approximately.

Well I'm glad it missed the Selby area as our group will be that way twice this year. Here in the Stillwater MN area we got hit pretty good. I'm wondering how the robins and bluebirds are doing that started appearing 3-4 weeks ago? Unreal weather!

I thought the Prez said global warming was fake news .

It is fake news here this year. We should have green grass now but instead the ground is still frozen, and looks like it will stay that way for awhile. The whole globe does not need to warm up but we need it to here. I am sure there will be a time this summer that I will wish it was cooler and wetter.

I'm still in Arizona (heading back on Thursday) but my wife has been back in Watertown since the 5th. They had 9" of snow a week ago today. A lot of that melted during the week but it started snowing again Friday and was still snowing early this morning. Also a lot of wind with this latest storm. I90 was closed from Sioux Falls to Mitchell and I29 was closed from Sioux Falls to Watertown. They just opened both this morning.

My friends in Amour SD said they got 7-10 inches of hail (i think friday)followed by snow blowing 50 mph. Said lots of people out of power. Sent pictures of ice on everything. Looked pretty thick on the barb wire. Hope our feathered friends found good places to shelter.

Our Amour friends were happy to come to sunny south Carolina three weeks ago for some striper action on Lake Hartwell. All are welcome in South Carolina! If you are coming through the Clemson area, give me a shout. john

I think that the birds faired pretty well through this storm. I saw several dozen birds (both hens and roosters) on my drive to work this morning. The storm even had the coyotes moving around at first light - there is one less to harass the pheasants after this morning. It's going to be a good day!!
