Birds hoping for the best

I fished Glen Elder this spring and saw the most birds I have seen in the last several years and was pretty hopefull for a good season. I am very concerned that this lack of rain is going to hurt us this seaon. I did go scouting the other day in North Central Kansas and did see some hens with chicks but both groups were small hatches one Hen with four chicks and I did not get a good count on the 2nd one but I saw at least two chicks. I will miss this season due to another deployment to Afghanistan but I hope the best for you guys, hopefully we will get some rain soon. I also saw several Coyotes during my drive and I am sure they are not helping with the Pheasant numbers.

i have stopped in the glen elder area on my way back home before lots of crp i wouldnt mind hunting it little big for just one guy crp is really big good crops around it though

Thank you for your service and sacrifice.

I promise we will leave plenty of birds for you when you return.

Tom, thanks for all you do for the Country.

My guess is that this season will be better than last, but not a great year numbers wise.

Your not going to miss much I expect.

Too bad it is not Korea where you would at least see some rooster.

Good luck Trooper & come home safe:thumbsup:

I heard there are quite a few pheasants in Afghanistan's poppy fields.

Thanks for your service Ranger.

Aren't Afghan ringnecks native to Afghanistan? Maybe you could use some leave time and shoot a few? Thanks for your service.

I believe they have quail also (coturnix coturnix).

So from 1-10, most ranked 2010-2011 around an 8. Last year as a 4 or
5, any guesses on what this year wil be? I'm hoping for a 6 or 7! LOL!

We saw around 130-150 birds per day in 2010-2011, (that includes roadside, wild flushes, EVERYTHING) last year around 60-75. Hoping for at least that again this year.

We hope the best for you.

Me worrying about some silly birds falls a far second to what you and your family must be concerned with. I wish you well.

If you rated last year as a 4 or 5 you will see a 3 or 4 this year. A lot of grass was lost to fires the first of July and with Kansas being in the worst drought since 1956 this summer, it is wishful thinking for a decent year for pheasants. They are starting to bale corn already in some areas.

There was a strong sense of optimism in early spring. We were receiving timely rains then. That ended all too quickly.

Thanks

To be honest this post is not about me it is about my concern for our Pheasants but I do appreciate the kind words. This is my fifth combat deployment so I am used to it. It does suck to miss yet another season but nice to know folks like you are out there enjoying the outdoors. Keep up your great post as this is as close to bird hunting as I will get this season. I am praying for rain for the rest of you. As I said I had great hopes for this season back in April when I saw so many birds but I just don't think there will be great recruitment of our young birds for this season. I am sure there will be a few pockets of great hunting but the lack of rain will hurt this year. Well hoping for a great 2013. You guys will have to work a little harder for your birds this year but I hope you have some great hunts. I did go fishing in south Dakota in June and I saw birds all over the place maybe this is the year for you all to take a roadtrip north. Well good luck and stay safe.
