Beretta 686 Silver Pigeon 1 (20 Gauge)

I know you want the Silver Pigeon, but why not save some jingle,(especially if its going to see extensive work in the field) and go with the 686 White Onyx..

Saving money is always nice! I called a local gun shop and he said that they don't produce that model any more and the SP was there entry model gun.

OVer and unders and side by sides are a waste of time. Inhop I shoot a auto banelli that works just Fine. I have over and unders and Side by sides. I dont uses them any more. I am selling the the are not as good as my autos. and no where as pretty. Just my opinion. Three shoot is better than two all day long.

I agree, I use my 3rd shot enough to justify wanting it.

It's hard for me to believe someone who hunts a lot never still has birds in range after firing 2 shots. Even if both shots connect.

Maybe your saying your fine watching birds fly away with an empty gun.

Over/unders

I sure like the look of my 20 gauge 870 I got when I was maybe 10 years old. It is my only shotgun, so I have killed many birds with it. There is just something about the SP 1, it looks so pretty and feels so nice. I think I am going to REALLY like it when I finally get one.

As far as the two shots go I don't think it's a big deal. If I can't hit a bird with two shots I better practice more. I live in Iowa and it's very rare I get the chance to shoot at two birds like the good ol days when I was younger. I love to shoot birds but I enjoy watching my GSP work in the field just as much.

I am the same. I have several over and unders that simply sit on the sidelines and are never fired at all kinda of a waste

There is a 20 ga on trapshooters that looks petty good for $1150 plus shipping. Has 26" barrels which in my opinion are fine. Don't think there is much interest in it over there though because of the barrel length. About as cheap as I have seen one guy for. Was tempted but already have a 20 O/U that hardly makes it out of the safe due to the 16 ga. From the pics looked pretty clean and also had original box I think.

I used to shoot a Benelli SBE with an extended mag. I could hold 9. I sold it to get my cortona. Now that I have this OU gun that fits. I tell ya what. I am fine with 2 shots. Not to brag, but with a gun that fits, and yes there is a way to check that and actually "fit" a gun, I kill more birds. Now it is an extension of my body it seems and if I pull the trigger 99.999999% of the time the bird is dead. I absolutely will never go back to an auto ever again. It has been a non issue. There are many places you hunt that I could shoot all 9 of those shells and game is still flushing and your going to watch them fly away. Getting 2 more shells in a OU is fast and simple. And I don't like even hunting with guys that don't use a break open gun anymore. With a break open when your standing around you break it open. Every one feels safe. And it is well known by all that person is clearly being safe. Rarely do I see a person with a auto or pump unload at a fence, or at the end of the field chatting. They unload them on the road back at the truck. Way to often taking risks that could be a buddy killer, simply because they are a nuisance to unload. In trials or training they are not allowed to be used, because of the safety factor. And as said, I only can shoot 2 or 3 birds a day. Non factor:thumbsup: MC if you buy this gun, just make sure the people selling it to you know how to show you "fit" It is a must with a break open. Its not so much the cost or the brand name as many make nice guns. Its getting that one that fits you.

That's a nice piece Matt.

I have 7 semi autos in the safe, which for the most part haven't seen the light of day since I bought my 686.

I agree with everything you said. I will make sure when I get it the people know how to show me fit. Good luck hunting!

I have a silver pigeon II with gorgeous wood that has never been assembled
AS IN EVER...still in the box
I like the semi autos

I have the White Onyx version. The WO and the SPI were sold at the same price. I actually like the WO better because the SPI's engraving looks cheap to me. I have a WO, my brother has a SP I, and my dad has an SPV. We never carry our semi's or autos anymore. IMO a double with variable chokes is more versatile than a pump or auto with 3 shells and 1 choke. Most single barrel guns are running a mod choke, which makes you hold your first shot unless you want to destroy the bird. And the longer shots aren't any good either because you don't have enough choke. That's not an issue with a double. Running an IC/Mod, or Mod/Full for late season birds Will increase your kill rate. Plus, I can reload my double a LOT faster. I've actually hit a triple on a single flush with a reload in the middle..... Just don't ask me to do it again! :)

Maintaining your shotgun

Well ladies and gentlemen I just purchased my first over/under. I was wondering what everyone uses to oil the wood on your shotgun? Also the manual says to store it in the case it came in disassembled, can I leave it assembled in the Boyt soft shotgun case I got for it or should I keep it in the one it came in?

Is there a certain product you reccomend using? Thanks!
