Been trying to get the dog, and myself, used to the beeper collar. I have never used one before. All of my previous pointing dog hunting was done with bells.

I must say......so far I find it annoying LOL! It does take away from the majestic feel of listening to the bell chiming through the grass as well.

I have full intention of using it this upcoming season because I do like the principal, but was just curious what other guys use and if others agree that the beeper sort of takes away from the experience a little.

Beeper set on point-only is fine in the grouse woods but I have come to prefer an Astro and a good bell there...the later for instant connection.
Weaning was tough.

Pheasants?..no beeper or bell now.

I never found a beeper detracted from any experience when used.
I have found that hunters past two does.

Bell for me. Allows you to know where the dog is at all times without visual contact. When the bell stops, it's a point; move in for the flush.

i've never used a bell or a beeper. i suppose my dog's collar jingles when she runs, so that almost counts as a bell and it's more than enough for me.

Bell. Beeper

First used beeper in 1998. Tried several and settled with a Tri Tronics. Usually just had it on point or location mode. I did not care for the loud sound emitted so near the ear. I now use an Astro and am pleased.
I wish the Astro would have been available in the 1950 + years. I usually had two EP down. I never lost a dog but they did disappear at various times.

Beeper or bell

I use a sport dog collar and beep infrequently with the transmitter when my dog ranges. I hunted with a guy who used a bell last year and after listening to that for a few hours my dog and I stopped at the nearest bar on the way home and both had a couple just to get that sound out of my head. IMH inexperienced O, those wild SD pheasants need some stealthy tactics, and silence is a thing of beauty when you're on the prairie and the sun is low. 40 years of bow hunting for whitetails in Wisconsin really shut me up.

neither, I do run a beeper but I can make it beep with my transmitter if I am not sure where my dog is at.

Exactly but in really thick cover when I can't see the dog I will use the point only mode. Cannot stand listening to constant beeping, whistle blowing etc.

I use both at the same time. I use a bell to keep track of him and set my Dogtra 2500 T&B to beep on point only. It also is nice having the e-collar on him in case I have to stop him from doing something he shouldn't like run trash for example.

When the bell stops, it's a point; move in for the flush.

But the only problem I see with that is locating them on point in heavy cover. With the beeper you can at least go to the sound.

To each his own I guess.

I like to run a beeper in Point-only mode at the very least. Sometimes I will have the beeper turned off and just use a locate feature for a quick check on location in heavy cover.

Neither and I try not to talk to much or slam car doors.

A bell at 150 yards through cattails on a dog not moving doesn't seem real useful anyways.

I wouldn't subject my dogs to the noise of a garbage truck backing up all day either so beepers are out.

An astro on the other hand is always on the boys when hunting pheasants.

I like many others use mine now only for the ability to locate them in heavy cover but over the years have shot many pheasants and quail over a dog with a beeper going off and in the early days of crp you really needed something to keep track of where your dog was even if they didn't get very far from you. Iam not familiar with what a astro is could someone tell me about it. Thanks.

Bells only for my close working labs. I cant stand to listin to that continouse beeping on somebody elses dog so I guess I will stick with the bell.

My hunting partner had a GWP that we'd lose for 45 minutes sometimes while he was on point in thick crap. I bought him a Cabela's beeper collar that beeped while running and made a hawk call on point to help hold the birds. Nice feature I thought but the collar was so loud my friend was concerned for his dogs hearing and never used it.
That said, I hunted pheasants most of my life w/o a dog and being quiet was part of getting close enough to birds to be successful. Dogs are noisy enough w/o a collar that the birds know you're there. It may sound wrong but w/o a dog you can often hear the birds in the cover and get close enough to step on them.

Bells or beeps

Thanks for a good discussion on the matter. Very good to get input and points of view. I still like to think I'm sneakin' up on em' even if I'm not.

that is what i have decided to to. I cannot stand the constant beeping so I will use it for pointing and locating only.

so glad that I took the time to find a beeper that will work with my collar remote.

Niether

In the past I have used beepers and bells. Not anymore. Now I have a Garmin Alpha set up. Best ever. Quiet and I know where the dog is and what she's doing when I can't see her.
