Bad day for me!

I went bird hunting and missed 5 birds. Its driving me insane. I swear my dog even tilted her head and was thinking really you missed that one. I just felt like sharing my awful day with everyone.

It happens man it happens----just keep after it and they will begin to fall--keep the old chin up:D

I remember hunting in Iowa many years ago. A buddy and I were walking both sides of a fence row in a heavy wind. An old rooster got up into the wind and circled around. We were both shooting autos and managed to miss that bird 6 or 7 times between us. It happens. I think it gets in your head a little. I have to go out and shoot something, even if it is a can on a post, just to prove the gun works.

I went pheasant hunting not to long ago and did pretty bad. The guy i was hunting with told me to change my choke to a full choke.(I had modified in at the time)...

Was this the day you referred to in the 'Which choke to use' thread quoted above... or one since then?

Sorry to hear you're still having troubles. Are you clearly missing - or just not killing them cleanly? I doubt the modified choke you were using was causing your problems.

Have you been successful with this gun previously... or while shooting clay targets earlier this year ?

Odds are - it's either a gun fit or shooting techique issue. If possible, spend 5 minutes at a patterning board to rule out big holes in your pattern. Try that and a day or two shooting a couple hundred clay targets. Try not to get frustrated.

The rest will work itself out. Good Luck.

Been there. One time we came across this mallard hole with around a thousand ducks in it. A small pot hole. They were coming and going non stop. I just walked in kicked the whole lot up and hunkered down. They never really left. They kept pouring in on me like flys on a dung heep. I proceeded to shoot a whole 25 round box up at real easy close shots. Many were even just flapping wings basicly sitting still in mid air trying to find a place to sit. They just would not leave. I have never seen any thing like it. I walked back to the truck to my two friends watching. They never thought I would get close to them to start with. After all that they laughed their asses off when I never had a stinking duck. They said well are u going back out there???. NO! we drove away,LOL. They were still pouring in like crazy. But I had enough,LOL.

You lucky dog. Look on the bright side, i've never even had 5 rossters to shoot at in a day.

I'm still waiting for the part where his day goes bad.

Sounds to me like you had too much weight on the back part of your front foot! That will throw you off every time. LOL! Hey everybody has a bad day now and again. If a gun fits it will shoot where you are looking...then you just have to be careful where you are looking. I found it helps me to concentrate on the white ring and imagine where it is going to be when my shot gets there. If he's trucking shoot further in front, and above all kepp that head down! Gees, I sound like an expert, and I don't know anything! LOL! It is real easy to see that big old long bird and think NOW! Seriously focus on that neck and adjust your lead, maybe it will at least help to look at the front of the bird.

When I was a kid I was walking onto a dove field and one flew over going left to right off of my left shoulder. I dropped it cleanly to the applause of many on the field. I shot three boxes of shells that afternoon and never cut another feather! I tried every lead possibly and found out (FINALLY) that lead doesn't matter at all if you are shooting OVER the bird. Get the face hard on the stock! Nobody has ever been a more frustrated wing shot than me, and while I'm better I still can miss with the best of them! Better luck next time, but you are at least seeing birds!

Buy another box of shells...make sure these have lead in them:D

Could be worse . . . at least you SAW five birds. We saw one that was legal, 2 that were not & I considered that a stellar day in SE WA. Location, location, location . . .

2 years ago went 10/11 on quail in the toughest of conditions.

Next day went 1/25. One bird on an entire box of shells! That might win the futility award after winning the sharp shooter award....

Shells are cheap!

Hunting is fun.

This past weekend we had an annual grouse/woodcock hunt. Grouse flushes were only about 6 per day, but we cleaned up on the timber doodles. My pup mopped them up and I was really happy with how he handled a large number of bird contacts [there was woodcock droppings everywhere - a lot of scent] and hunting with a group for the first time.

Most in the group shot 2 boxes of shells and for all that lead flying we had 35 woodcock and 1 grouse for 6 guys over 2 days. I told them to take their time, that they're being too quick. Dog on point, I go in to flush and don't have a shot, but down the line it goes with 3-4 guys emptying their guns at him. I shot my share of birds, but only shot maybe a half dozen shells and can't remember firing the second barrel all weekend. You may be hurrying. Relax and take time to focus, not snap shoot.

I am still looking for the awful part of your day. Did you get a ticket on the way out of town, did you have a flat, did your dog get hurt, did you get stuck and have to walk four miles to the nearest house to find someone to pull you out, did you have to spend the morning in the ER ? If all you got is missed 5 birds, you have not had an awful day my friend. I am reaching for the big yellow whiner flag unless you can come up with something worse than "I missed 5 birds" you had to see 5 birds before you could miss them. ;)

Just a passing phase.

The dog was asking for a turn where she got to shoot since you couldn't get the job done....sounds REASONABLE ON HER PART
