Anybody been out?

We went on Sunday up to bilby again. We killed 5 roosters. I took a friend who had never been before so I let him try to shoot one over my dog's point and he missed. We also knocked one down but couldn't find it. We should have had 7 roosters but still a great hunt for only 5 guys.

I agree with old & new, no way do we have more quail than KS. Don't know who puts out that BS or what metrics they are using to measure each state.

Deer & turkey hunting experts gathering quail stats?

I worded that poorly. The study claimed that the avg Missouri quail hunter shot around 22 birds per hunter per season. Kansas had a much higher overall harvest, but lower success per upland hunter. I still don't believe it!

Been to Whetstone a few times this year. Quail emphasis? Dont get me wrong, I love going on long walks with the dog, but seriously. Heading to South Dakota Sunday evening for my 2nd trip this year and cant wait to get the barrel warm again.

great day

After several not so good days quail hunting in missouri, we had an awesome day on Sunday. Moved 6 or seven covey during our 13 mile walk. Hunted 4 different areas and found birds on each. Killed seven. Good size coveys and didnt even put a dent in them. Passed lots of shots. One of those rare days. I had one day like that last year out of about twenty. Usual average is one to two covey with a 10 mile walk. We had awesome dog work which is the real reason i go. Amazing how one good day fires up the desire to keep going back! i was starting to think i was nuts. Now i am sure of it.

I live in southwest Missouri but hunt everywhere. When we find birds we remember where and later go back and put together a days hunt. Lots of miles and most young guys we take from time to time claim we are nuts and dont go back. I walk lots of days for nothing. Sometimes it pays off. Only know one guy thats as big of a walking idiot as me and we hunt a lot. Im Getting old and Fat And i hate treadmills.

I think I fit the bill for hunting with you guys overwieght and I can walk forever. We should all hunt a day sometime.

I confess as well! I don't think you can buy a license to hunt upland birds in Missouri, unless your overweight and showing your age.

I belong in this group too!!!! Older and just a little over weigh but still love to bird hunt behind good bird dogs!!!

Who can tell me anything useful about Bilby? I'm either going up there the day after Christmas for a couple of days or if my funds hold out I'll go back to KS. for another shot out there.

One of the few successfully managed MDC properties, productive, but gets pounded from the opener on. Extremely wise birds, if you harvest one you have earned it!

went saturday went to where i found a couple of nice covies only got a few points found a nice fresh roost so, that covie was still big, just din't find them. again never seen another hunter or heard any shooting hunted on corp land
i am also old and fat

Reckon I can post here, too since Dad was born & raised in Stanberry. Not too much fat on this old boy, tho . . . too much time spent ridge-running over my 63-years & I'm chasing Chukars again in a little bit.

Stanberry area, is one of the last strongholds of remnant pheasants in the state. Stanberry-Maryville-over to Albany-Darlington, is best left. Come home sometime and we'll take a stroll and see what we can find! My Cousins lived in the White Swan, Washington area for years, lots of pheasants there then, even bobwhite quail in 60's and 70's.

Never been back there O&N, but would like to see where Dad grew-up . . . there's likely still a few Ficklins around there and that could very well be what fueled Dad's lifelong passion for Springers & Pheasants when he settled in Montana after WWII. Be careful what you wish for . . . I may show-up & thank you. White Swan isn't like it was anymore. And my Chukar hunt this morning was a bust . . . plotted how we would hunt this nearby honey-hole of draws last night . . . pup & I were rarin' to go, but the darn fog wouldn't lift. Had about 30' of visibility & I'm not dropping into those spots even with GPS; too easy to lose a young pup or get in trouble. On the plus side, it gave me an opportunity to run my little Jeep off-road a bit. I'll go out later & take the landowner some Salmon fillets & a jug for Christmas.
