And yet another report

Nice comments guys:) It doesn't really matter as long as you have fun:thumbsup:. I think it does hurt conservation efforts though:( I've heard alot of people say SD has tons of pheasant and not alot of cover. They just have much better cover:confused:. So the moral of the story is theres no silver bullet in SD it's just they go at it allittle different:)
Thats good fishing jackrabbit:10sign:

It's more of a joke between Iowa and SD SMO not criticizing anyones way of hunting:) I'm referring to SD's dirty little secert:eek: The releasing of tame pheasant on public ground in SD (trailers full of them). You hit the right day on public ground after a release and it's a limit in A minute  I had guides and farmers from SD tell me 70-90% of pheasant shot in SD are pen raised:eek: There has to be some truth to it by how many people have told me this.

Pure crap Coot. I have lived here 62 years and they do not release birds on public land.

So, you want to tell me how a "pay to hunt" place can put 30 hunters through a field and they all limit out each and every time they hunt the ground that they are not putting pen raised birds back into the field to restock. Get real people if you think that is not happening.
Certainly some of the pay to hunt places put birds out, even tho they are not preserves. I kn ow of some that tend to do it during bad seasons such as this one, but the State does NOT PUT AND SHOOT.

FYI I belong to they local propheasant group and over the years I've released a few hundred pheasants on public hunting areas.

Proof I think:) Like I said before I'm talking SD in general not dnr or state. I'm sure the persons I've talked to about this know what their talking about. They have no reason to lie and they did it themselves for profit:eek: Which SD seems to know alot about Wall Drug, blackhills, stugis and yes fishing and hunting too.

captaincoot i do apologize i thought you were saying that the state of SD meaning the SD game & fish were releasing pen raised birds on public lands that is not correct... except in the black hills... i would agree with your 1st comment if 70%-90% of the hunters hunted private lands but im not sure on that??? i have known about & dont care for the PRIVATE guys releasing pen raised hens in the spring to up the brood production in areas of SD but they do that on private lands & guiding operations & claim to have 100% wild birds that horrible to do!!! to the hunters that is... they also release birds through out the season to hunt i agree 100% coot that is the case in SD & that was the reason i avoided hunting SD for so long... 100% honest i just want to get my young dog on alot of birds... i seen mostly hens i huge flocks like i do in MN late season & roosters spotty & in thick thick cover but in pairs & small flocks a few mixed hen/rooster flocks 80%+ hens rest roosters that seems average for even MN wear we do not release birds... i seen pheasants on the road in MN & out in the open even on public lands beat n up for 9 days strait by deer hunters they ran like hell from cars but they were acting just like the birds across the border in SD were??? all the birds in SD i seen could fly very well & i shot a mixed age class of birds from a rooster with just shy of 3 quarter inch spurs to a stub tailed baby & every age class in-between...??? im honestly asking here dose that seem like released birds or wild???

i talked to travis runia think thats write? the head SD game bird biologist years ago & 2 other SD game & fish biologist & 2 CO officers in recent years about the releasing of barnyard turkeys in SD & them hybridizing with wild turkeys they all said the same thing there is no law in SD stating that people can not release game birds on there own property & them making there way onto public lands they explained that they dont change that due to the pheasants being released by guides & private land owners... but i thought you could not release game birds directly onto PUBLIC LANDS to hunt??? in many parts of the SD prairie & the turkey tracks hunt club in the black hills maid famous by ron schara there is no pure strain merriams turkeys they are now all hybrids pen raised & merriams they all just call them merriams but you can see there hybrids... i fear there will be no true wild pheasants in the future if everybodys releasing pen raised pheasants all over SD pheasant range public & private??? i mean i have jumbo ringneck at home they are dumb slow & farthest from wild pheasants whats stop n people from releasing them onto public lands in SD??? that would suck to do that to true wild pheasants...

if ND had more crops out at the time i left i would of went to ND i would rather hunt ND any way but i was just dumb enough small minded enough ignorant enough naive enough to think that the people of SD would not need the revenue bad enough to stock/release pheasants onto PUBLIC LANDS to get return hunters that is B/S all the way!!! i could care less what or how many pheasants people release on private lands or sell them birds as wild but leave the PUBLIC LAND PHEASANTS WILD not pen raised thats just lie n to people no matter how you put it... loads of people want to hunt 100% public land wild pheasants not pen raised birds!!! why travel to SD to hunt pen raised birds on public lands??? you can do that any wear!!!

after reading RINGNECK REDNECKS post i do not think i will ever buy another SD pheasant/small game license i will use my 2nd 5 day hunt period but that comment wrecks the public land hunting in SD for me if the public lands are not free of pen raised birds then no wear in SD is safe from pen raised birds & that is not my thing at all no way shape or form... like said above each to there own i cant pretend to hunt pen raised birds as wild & think i really was doing something special... yes all pheasants were pen raised & released at 1 time but truly wild pheasants that have lived in the wild for generations are more wild or adapted to there habitat then pen raised dumb dumbs thats a fact...

RINGNECK REDNECK are you releasing pheasants for pheasants forever??? or a private group of guys doing this on there own to go hunt birds later??? i just dont get why you guys release pen raised pheasants on public lands how is that a challenge to go hunt up later in the season??? can you PM me what areas you do this please i honestly will never hunt them areas i just want to know so i know wear to avoid next trip & if wear i was hunting was a release site or area??? DONT POST IT ON HERE IF YOU DONT WANT GUYS FLOCKING TO THAT AREA TO HUNT DUMB BIRDS... i really will not hunt the region if you PM me the area or town i would really love to know wear to avoid & if my birds could of been pen raised i guess they all could of been after you comment...

i honestly do appreciate you posting that info RINGNECK REDNECK that will sure as hell clear up a lot of argument it is a bummer to find out for me thow... i should of went to ND... i still cant/wont pump SD as a must hunt i got to go to ND & check them wild pheasants out if i have a good/decent hunt ND will be my must hunt...

with 90,000 less hunters ND hold its own pheasants wise VS SD just look up the harvest numbers VS hunter numbers ND has birds coot... SD is king but if there all pen raised ND is the real deal!!!

It's a local propheasants group and most of these guys raise and release their birds on private land. I release my birds around the age of six weeks. At that age they aren't very tame and can survive on the own. These birds are released in July so if they are still around they will be wild. I'm sure there are other groups around the state doing the same thing.

Relased Birds

It is a reality that some people release birds into the wild population......

I was told that before the season that a local chapter of Pheasants Forever released 500 birds down in the Wagner area. I am not sure if they were released on public or private. I can't confirm that this is even true but the info came from locals we know in the area.

A quick story about a hunt last year. I was on public land and my dog was working a bird. All at once he comes flying by me like his butt was on fire. Obviously the bird had double backed and was sprinting for his life. I turned around to join the pursuit when the bird got up 25-30 yards ahead of me and well ahead of the dog. I dropped it and the dog retrieved it. When I looked at the bird it had a band around it's leg from one of the local hunting reserves that must release birds for their paying clients. I don't know if they band all their released birds or if the did this for a special reason. If it wasn't for the band I never would have guessed it to be a released bird.

Good average - I think I'm at or near the average, on private land not public...

A good dog certainly helps with the average!
