All in the family

Any guns you have that been handed down or purchased from family that carry's great sentimental value and stories?

I have a first year production 700 Remington in 243 my dad gave me years ago. It's shot a truck load of deer over the years.

My dad gave me a 686 S&W 357mag 4.5" barrel.

I bought my wife's great grandfathers SxS 12ga exposed hammer gun. I wish I knew the stories behind this gun. It was on my wife's family farm in central South Dakota when the Calvary still road the prairies in the 1880's. It has London Fluid Steel barrels and I have shot it numerous times with 2.5" Poly Wad ammo. I hope to go though family photo's some day and find hunting photo's from a time long ago.

Up until last summer, I had never bought a gun. Everything I've used was passed down to me. First gun was an Ithaca 37, 20ga. dad gave me. The gun I have used for the last 20 something years is G-pa's Model 12, 16ga. Finally bought a gun for myself last year, Citori, 16ga. Not quite used to it. Still feel the need to carry the Model 12.

I have a model 12 16ga myself...one fine pump gun.

If you have trouble deciding you can pass the 410 SxS to me :)

My family has the Springfield trap door rifle the my Great Great grandfather had in the Calvary, during the Indian wars.

I will get my dad's guns but I would give them all up to have one extra day with him.

I got my dad's guns and still wish I could give them back for just one more day afield with him.

That's awesome.

I have a shirt tail relative who has a gun(old army rifle) he says was my great grandfathers. He doesn't shoot or hunt and I have never seen him with a gun in all my life. I have asked if I could buy the gun. He says he doesn't want to sell it, yet he reminds me that it was my great grandfathers every time I have been at his house. Kind of like he wants to get a reaction from me each time. :(:(

My first .22 . . . Remington 541T target; my first big-game rifle - 7.65 Argentine Mauser that Dad sporterized for me (Mannlicher-style) -- 2-power Weaver is brass under the bluing; Dad's: 12 sxs Stevens, .35 Remington pump, original FN .380 (not a word of English on it).

I have grandpas 12ga wingmaster, the first brand new gun he ever bought in '53. Gpas savage .243, model 70 22-250, savage 22 mag, and an old (mdl 1894?) 32-20 lever gun. My great unlce has an old English SxS .410 that I would love to have but the one I really want is the 25-06 grandpa made just before he died. My unlce (who doesn't even hunt) has it hanging on the wall and while that's a nice memorial I'm sure grandpa would much rather see it in the woods taking a nice buck.

well said- I had but my brother now has in safe keeping- Dads old Remington 20 guage auto that was slammed in a car door resulting in a short barrel with the PolyChoke- like the Browning with the square back- dad could make that gun talk-

I had my father’s first shotgun a Remington 11-48 (16) Gauge. After several years I decided restore the wood stock and formarm with over 40 coats of hand rubbed tung oil. My father had purchased it at my Grandmothers brother in laws hardware store in 1949. I have got my use out of the gun and taken my fair share of birds with it. So last year I passed it on to the next generation in hopes that it will remain in the family for future generations.

That's my biggest fear, passing mine and my dad's guns on(including great grandfathers SxS) to my son's and having them or their wife/girl friend peddle them. My wife's uncle got all of her one grandfathers guns. Well, he died young of his own accord and his wife who was on the outs with the whole family got what he had not sold himself. They are all gone. That is flat out sad. with today's high divorce rates and dirty parting of ways. Many family heirloom's become get even devises. Sold for spite or peddled by a spouse who has zero connection to their real sentimental family value. They become just a way to obtain cash for them. My son had a girl friend who could blow money like nobody's business. No man could make enough money to keep this girl in check. Thank God he's cut the ties and has moved on from such a person but that worries me about passing on irreplaceable several generation firearms. Fact is, I will will them to a responsible person who will ultimately assure me that they will be looked after and NEVER! lost to foolish way. Be it a family member or someone outside the family who will assure their proper distribution to hunting family members who will keep them, enjoy them and know their history so when they pass them on. The new owner will continue their heritage.

Only one I have at this moment I traded my grandpa a 5 gallon bucket full of tomatoes for an old Savage automatic (copy of an A5 Browning) he took as partial commission for auctioning a neighbors goods. He told me it was identical to the one he had carried back when we had quail around here worth hunting, but the original had burned up in a house fire when my mom was a kid.

Wife has her grandpa's pump action 12 guage, I think its a Hi-Standard or some such from the 50's.

Dad has his great uncles Marlin 1894 in .25-20, manufactured in 1906 I believe. He's shot quite a few squirrels with that using his own cast bullets. Dad was the first one really into guns, before that guns were just tools and hunting got in the way of work. Not much to pass on because of that.
