Seems like now is just as good as a time as any being that grouse and dove season is open, and woodcock starts in 3 days.

Post your Minnesota upland bird hunting strategies, photos, success, and failures for the upcoming season right here.

Pheasants, grouse, woodcock, doves, prairie chicken, etc. Let's see em and hear about it.

70 at sunrise and 87 at 4 PM. Crazy hot start of the season. I used to have some really good grouse hunting 2nd half of September. Leaves on trees were rarely that much of a bother.

I got out on a couple short walks last weekend up at my place in northern MN. Couple flushes but no birds bagged. Way to damn hot to be busting brush for long.

I saw a guy almost kill a dog in a dove field once. the third time that I went over and told him his dog was too hot, I wasn't very nice about it. Poor dog was gulping with every other breath. Sure sign of overheating!

Tons of leaves, tons of bugs, and tons of heat/humidity still out there.

Its like hunting in the summer time right now. Barf

September has essentially become an extension of the summer in terms of weather.

Next weekend will be my first hunts of the season. I'll be going just to get the 11 year old dog a little field time since she cannot go on my pheasant hunts anymore. Hopefully she'll get on a couple of grouse and woodcock in an hour walk. I don't expect to shoot anything due to the aspens still being leafed out.

So what's the flavor of the barn grouse??

I have fixed pigeon as fajitas. It's not bad at all. Most people would say they taste better than that goose that I shot.

The bacon wrapped poppers in the photo was made with dove.

After hunting season, I will likely take all the pigeon meat, along with goose, pheasant legs, etc, grind it a mix with ground bacon to make bacon/game burgers.

A couple of years ago, at annual pheasant camp in Iowa, we took pigeon breast, dredged in frying mix, and deep fried it. We then coated in Buffalo Wild Wings sauces. We used the hot sauce and Parmesan garlic.

All of it was eaten and nobody complained.

There is much call to do it again this year
