2024 Spring Turkey Hunt

Seems this is an old post but I’ve always got turkey on the brain. Be hunting my state til NY opens, than after couple days NH, maybe VT the following weekend. Course Maine is right close there too.
Youth weekend is just over a month out. Been making mouth calls, rolling shells, watching/filming birds. Displaying/gobbling here as every year since Feb. still in winter flocks though

I bought my spring license the other day when I bought my 2026 angling license. I normally hunt season B here in MN but I have a conflict that time period, so I went with season A which starts on April 15.

couple fav pics of my kids. Couple different days the picture with the Double made the fish n game digest following year. The Double was a first attempt for them both.

One of these years you need to man up and hunt the late season.

Fellas season about to open. Youth days are earlier, the birds not pressured yet. It gives you a chance to hunt early. Bring a camera/camcorder, video it and give the footage to the kid. They’ll def enjoy it.
If you don’t have a kid, look for one. Lots of people don’t understand our mentality towars hunting. Bringing a kid along gets them to try it before ridiculous options get forced into their head. I’d strongly recommend an adult come with them. This protects you and if the adult doesn’t understand either they will after that hunt. Hey don’t forget the little girls.
The young red head in the mentored kid pics mom came into the archery shop I was teaching in. Said the kid wanted to turkey hunt and she’d pay. She was referred to me.
I met mom and the girl, said I’d do it and no money was exchanging hands.
She killed a bird on the first turkey hunt with me and her smile was more than worth it to me. Sage is now a Marine. God bless her

This is example pf filming. Im not pro by any means. My buddy Bob was calling, myself filming. I had the first longbeard pegged to where i coulda put a hula hoop on ground and he woulda landed in it.
He unfortunately missed. It was raining hard. We went to a new farm and called a lomgbeard and 3 jakes in. Longbeard spooked. He wanted to shoot the jake. He made film up. Awesome job for a kid that young
Forgot to mention we had the kid come roost birds w me the night before. Walking down train tracks, horse trails in the dark listening to birds hammer at us had to be neat for him and add to the excitement. All just ideas for anyone wanting to try and please do

I have a nephew who just turned 12 in march, and past Hunter's ed, so I'm going to try and get him out sometime this spring and see if I can get him a turkey. Neither one of his parents hunt so that's going to be kind of an issue.

Why do you suspect an issue?

Gotcha well I hope they allow it and I hope you get him a bird
He's a small kid, I don't have a shotgun that will fit him, but I do have a little Ithaca side by side 20 gauge that doesn't have a recoil pad, I think it's a 26-in it was my dad's gun. My dad has short arms. He has done a little bit of shooting but not much.. it wouldn't surprise me if he was to wound a bird.

Becoming a good solid turkey hunter, take years. It took me about 10 years to get reasonably good at it where I was shooting gobblers most years. You have to pay your dues in turkey hunting, you will screw up many many times.
