2024 Season In Pictures, Guns, Game And Dogs

Hey all, my son Jim and I went out today with Addie of course.

Jim got one, but had to cut it short. So I carried on and was able to limit. Nice day, but windy. The birds were a bit spooky, but I managed it somehow. Addie did great BTW

Anyway, I used my 12b J. Blanch with those evil Damascus bbls.

Stay well my friends

Greg

I didn't think you could fire a Damascus safely.
You sure can if the bbls are solid and in good condition with no deep pitting or rust. They also should be checked out by a good smirh.

You should only shoot ammo that is low pressure. I reload my own to shoot in my English guns. Vintage brit guns are proofed to a service pressure of 8930psi for 2 1/2" chambers. My reloads have a pressure of 7000psi.

Damascus bbls get a bad rap because some folks haven't had them checked out and shoot modern ammo in them.

Lots of good info on Damascus bbls on the net.

All I can say is prior to shooting Damascus bbls or Vintage guns in general, do your homework.

Stay well

Hey all, my daughter Patty and I had a short hunt after our Church Fair.

Today was the opposite of the last time we went. I limited and she got one. Addie did very well!

I used my 12b Samuel Allport and Patty her 20ga Yildiz

Stay well my friends

Greg

I've never fired yhat old smith.id like to.

Great thread so far but dog gone is anybody hunting? I will be there in two weeks and I will report daily
Okay here is an anecdotal report. Dry conditions, been hot, not as many birds as the last couple years, but still birds. Two out of three today were 2 year olds. More hunters than the last couple years, but than I usually don’t start until November so that is relative. Where I am ,no telling, there are less birds, but huntable numbers. Grouse are way down, don’t ask me why. You can tell numbers are down for both pheasants and grouse as you hardly see a smashed one on the roads. As a nonresident who only hunts plots this has been just a brief picture, take it for what you want.

Is this observation state wide, or just in a certain section of the state?

Thanks swamp collies. I appreciate it. I will be in the extreme southwest in two weeks on mainly private ground. They have had a few showers the last several days. I hope it continues.

Another anecdotal report, this one from the northwest corner. Just finished up day 4, if you don't have access to posted land don't waste your time. Unposted land and PLOTS have already been pounded

Are the birds there and they are just flighty?
Our experience is that there are few to no birds on open lands. Electronic posting is choking out access and the birds get pushed into adjoining lands. Locals say a lot of recent hunters pay no attention to whether or not it's posted. That's not going to help going forward.

I took a guy to Kulm/Ellendale:Oaks area towards the end of the hay day that had never been on a pheasant hunt. As soon as we got into Kulm, we stopped at the bar to get something to eat and there were two guys in there that were obviously bird hunters. I asked them how the birds were and they said terrible, they hadn’t hardly shot a bird and they were packed up heading to Iowa in the morning. My buddy was looking at me like “what have you gotten me into!” You just drug me 24 hours for nothing. Well, there were limits by 11:00 or so every morning of the hunt. Moral of the story, go to Iowa. Hahaha!
