2015-16 Hunting Reports & Pictures

SMO

You are a prolific poster, but also very hard to make sense of sometimes. The way I read your posts, it appears you are double dipping.

While MN does allow you to shoot on other hunters limits the total for the day cannot exceed the daily limit for the total number of hunters.

If you shot 2 birds in the morning ... I am not so sure you are not allowed to reset your own daily limit just because you are with different people.

Not an expert on MN party hunting (I don't), but maybe you shared too much on a public forum ... maybe not.

Glad you saw birds.

Hunted some private Saturday morning that we always shoot birds at. We did not feel like fighting the crowds and wanted to spend the cool part of the day on what we thought was the best chance. Only saw a few hens and 1 rooster.

We took off south and started looking for good looking public land. Finally found some and I managed to miss a really nice shot on a bird I should have had. Not a gimme but should have been in the bag. Put up 1 more bird that i did not have a shot at. We then went to the south side of the pc and waited till the last hour and a half to get the coolest weather possible. The pointers split off and found 5 in the grass. Myself and they guys I was with only managed to find 1 bird. Finished the day with a total of 6 birds.

Sunday we hunted the same pc just a different part and managed to get 2 in the bag fairly quickly. Saw another 30+ birds but none of them were really within range. Derek (Lazer) and his buddy took off and the rest of us headed further south. While we were scouting out a spot we managed to pick up a rooster that flew over us into public land. Hunted the last hour of the day there and manged to pickup 6 more birds.

Hunted this morning and ended up with a big goose egg! That wind made it a little more difficult than normal. Found a few birds right away but nothing after that. They had to already be in the corn. Had a great time with old and new friends and that's what it is really about.

Derek has all the pics so hope he puts up a few.

Hunted a spot late Sunday afternoon and got into some tight holding birds, which was really fun. They issue was, they were all hens. My GSP made 7 bird contacts and it was great early season work for her. Even though I couldn't shoot any, it was great being out, watching the dog work.

Took 3 birds today myself ;)

2 ruffs and a woodcock.

Great afternoon to be in the woods. My 10 year old continues to be an absolute vacuum on those woodlot birds. My younger Brit keeps saying ... when we headed to the grass.

Skipped Sat, but when out Sun to a spot we had seen birds at in the past. Got there 45 minutes early just to have JoeSmo show up 5 minutes before LST and cut our field in half. We were four hunters and two pointers which is great for this WPA. And he walked in the side where we usually try to push the birds to.

And he shot. We didn't see a bird.

So frustrating.

I didn't make it out on either Saturday or Sunday of the opening weekend. I didn't want to deal with the headaches of hunting on the opener and Sunday was way too hot.

I made it out on Monday to a few spots south of Sleepy Eye. Only saw one other hunter all day. The corn was in the process of being taken out from what I could tell and there is a lot of nice habitat in the area. It was a tough day in the wind and I think the pup had a hard time picking up much scent. We managed to kick up five hens, but never saw any roosters. I didn't have very high expectations so even to see that many hens was a good sign?

I'm still debating as to if I should even bother going out this weekend or if I should just wait another week until all the corn is out.

Got over to MN this morning shot my limit in a couple of hours. It was a beautiful morning but did start to get warn towards noon.

Was able to get the first bird of the year last night. Made it out after work for the last 45 minutes of the evening on public land. Dog was very birdy the entire short hunt, put up this bird, one rooster out of range, and a few hens. It was a very fun hunt!

*I guess I am new to posting pictures here, not sure how to get it to show up without clicking on it..

Nice work jackrabbit, and nice stone theme in front of the house

Thank you. We just bought that house and moved in 2 weeks ago! Out in the country on a few acres, a nice change from Eagan where we previously lived. And most importantly, it allows me to drive a couple minutes from home and find a bird, which obviously I could not do living in the metro.

Congratulations on the big move! I'm a little out there but still in town. Saving up for the acreage part some day.

My young dog's first season in Nova Scotia is coming into full swing! We got our first limit the other day:

and one of them was her first water retrieve!

All along I figured her first waterwork would be a duck, not a rooster!

I'll be out tomorrow sw mn, weather looks good can't wait first time out this season. That means zero sleep trying to sneak out of work early to pick the boy up then get the gear all together told the dog last night we are going thought he was going to jump of the deck.....Oh wait he's already done that before :D

Good luck! Sent you a txt on a spot that went really well for us. Shoot me a call if you want more information.

I went out yesterday. Started by duck hunting in the morning, and heard cocks crowing all over. One couldn't have been more than 50 feet from me. By 9 I was changed and ready to chase roosters. Got birdy a few times but then nothing. Went to a different spot and found two trucks in the lot. It's over 500 acres so I walked the other direction. I heard them shoot a couple times. When I came back to switch dogs I found a field dressed bird laying there (pissed me off that they just left it like that). Then went out and found 5 hens (some may have been very young roosters) in switchgrass and willows. Followed up on them (thinking birds lead to more birds), and my spaniel flushed a rooster but it flew on the wrong side of tall willows and I didn't get a shot.

A couple things I noticed. The wind was a blessing and a curse. It was gusting up to 30 mph. Also, the first spot still had all the corn up in the surrounding fields. At the second spot the birds were in cover adjacent to cut corn. Once all the corn is down I'm sure I'll bag some more birds.

High winds can make it very difficult to flush birds.

That's neat how you had one cackling so close to you. Good stuff:thumbsup:

Nice pics guys. George, that one rooster looks like a hog in that photo.

Nick

Waterdog and I got out for an hour close to home. Had a nice double flush and we each got 1.
