2014 so far

Well the 2014 season is now in the history books, all we can do is look to the 3rd Sat in Oct 2015 which will be the 17 th.

As for 2014--it was a remarkable year: some numbers
Total number of people that hunted my place was 42 from 13 states and as close as I can figure we harvested between 80 and 90 roosters--there have been better years ---harvest of 204 was the high and --12 was the low the year before any habitat work was done.

The numbers being the numbers why was this year so good, it was better than last year but not as good as others when you look at the numbers--so it must be something else----I know what it was--- it was the people that hunted and the dogs--really had some good dogs hunting this year  The weather was warm and allowed people to stand around after working a field and visit--there were some very pretty sunsets---had more people get together and sit down and share a good meal at the end of the day. Met some of the UPH members that I've talked to, some for several years.

Bottom line here was that sure I can plant the cover and do things to increase the bird populations but I've always enjoyed the company of others when I'm bird hunting and I mean always--my 1st strong memory of any hunting was chasing a broken winged rooster around a haystack on my uncles place north of Salem SD when I was 4 or 5 yrs old, had help from several other kids--but I finally got him.

So there are 42 or so hunters and their dogs out there who helped make 2014 into one of the best seasons yet---Thank-You :10sign:

I like this post. It put me in a good mood as it made me reflect on this past season. Thanks Jim.

Well said 1pheas4, and I would add for Jim that he and his wife Clora are the ones who that provided the opportunity for me and all who shared the experience with them. Without them, their hospitality, and generosity, none of us would have had this particular pleasure in 2014. It lifts our collective spirits just to know there are still people out there like you two! God Bless and keep you. We are honored to call you our friends.

Well said bk. Work nearly made me miss the visit to Jim's this year...finances were making me question whether I'd be able to hunt with Tom the next day too. Thank God for allowing us the time and $ to visit Jim and Tom for those days made our trip "worth it". My youngest boy's trip highlight was the haystacks at Jim's. He climbed to the top and rolled down repeatedly, giggling the entire time.

Jim, I can't thank you enough. My dad, my boys, and I wish you a blessed 2015:thumbsup:

Yep he was quite the haystack/round bale runner--Gavin--right--I never thought he would be able to get up on the round bales at the west place--boy was I wrong.:D another of those special memories.:)

Yep, that's Gav or as Tom will affectionately remember him as, "The Purdy One":D Those kids will climb, throw, run, jump, or shoot anything you let them....and some stuff you won't let them:rolleyes: Gav is an outcast in his school b/c so few boys are active these days. He runs circles around 'em at recess while they play with their phones or whatever:cool:

Everyone had a good time watching Gav tumble down that hay stack, I'm glad to see kids around who enjoy making their own fun.

I really wish I lived closer and could lend a hand helping Jim and others like him turn some dirt.

Yea something tells me that kid won't meet a challenge he will back down from. Just tell him he can't do it.

I like the pics:thumbsup:
And really like your property and bird cover.

+1
I would love to have a few acres of land like that.

count me in for this as well! I will be putting in the request for days off sometime this month for a 5 day stretch in October/November!

Great trip

My party too, had a grand time hunting with you, Jim. With the work you are doing there, you are one of a kind. At my age, I don't even buy green bananas, as Groucho Marx said; but if I am spared another year, I hope that my "kids" and I will make it out there for more memories.

Well we didn't kill all of the roosters--was out on the back deck filling the bird feeders----just because hunting season is over ya don't think I'm gonna miss having birds around do ya?--I regularly feed over a hundred finches also Blue Jays-woodpeckers--morning dove( their a tough little group of 10 or so ) and anything else that wants to--I've gone thru over 130 lbs of sunflower and thistle seed so far and 8 suet cakes. Anyway I was out there for about 5 minutes or so when one of my yard roosters could not take it any longer and flushed about 20 yards away and flew off cackling into the CRP--I NEVER GET TIRED OF THAT :10sign:There are a couple of more months of winter to get thru but so far the birds are doing great and I hope the rest of the year is productive for the birds.

JIM

Glad you guys had a good time in SD. Looks like we have had a good winter so far. Pray for a good hatch this spring and next year could be like it was 6 years ago or so.

If you could just establish a timetable for that yard rooster...maybe next year I could go after him. A GPS collar on him couldn't hurt, either!:D
Seriously, a noble work you are doing, Jim; all I feed back here is fat doves and pesky squirrels; it ain't the same!
