My usual SD hunting buddy cancelled due to an injury, so my late season trip last week was solo -- with my springers. Hunted public-access land south of Mitchell from late Tuesday pm until noon Friday, and saw no other hunters except at the motel. Lots of time pounding the ground, brought home seven, lost one cripple, would have managed a limit each of the last three days but for the exasperation of missing some very easy chances where birds flushed close and I shot low or didn't account for them sliding sideways on the wind.

Comfortable weather, had a great time on the prairie.

Thanks/California Kids

Jim, had an awesome day at your place, good people, good dogs, good times. Here is a picture of the "Californian's" with a couple of the birds they got, they both swing a pretty hot gun!

Thanks again,

Patrick

The one rooster on the left looks like and older bird. Thick neck. He's a mounter. Rob send that one into me so I can mount him up for you:D

There's nothing like a South Dakota rooster hanging on the wall. Just saying.

Glad it worked out for everyone--and yes it was an awesome day but the birds really went into hiding after you left--it's been really hard---there is going to be snow up to 8 inches--that should make things more normal at least I hope so. It's been one heck of a year--so many great memories--people, dogs and many great days afield chasing the wild pheasant.

It truly was a great, memorable day at Jim's place. A real honor to hunt with a man where he cares so much for the wildlife on the land. If any of you guys have got the invite from Jim to hunt and haven't made it yet I would recommend moving that opportunity up on your list for sure. Plenty of birds to make it interesting and a very generous man who likes to share it, you're truly a class act Jim.:10sign:

Nick, I wish I would've thought about that. It sure was a nice, old long spur.

Patrick, thanks for sharing that pic. You and Lilah were awesome hunting partners and I can't wait to do it again.

What a week....

Jim, the future of pheasant hunting would be as bright as the sun if there were more like you. I can't express in words how appreciative we are of you and your efforts.

I'll put together a bit of a recap later. I need to spend the day with the wife and daughter I've been missing for the past 5 days!

Very, very well said kansasbrittany, and I could not agree more! I have been sad since I left his place earlier in the season, because it is a LOoonnnggggg time until next year. Good times and good folks!

Jay---really like the looks of your dogs, they remind me of a dearly loved black and white cocker I had and yes she hunted pheasants whenever I could get the "house dog" away from the former wife. :coolpics:

Thanks Jim. As I think is typical for field bred springers, they're avid, enthusiastic hunters and retrievers, lots of fun to hunt over. Five of the six I've owned have been around this 30 lb. size, the other was closer to 35. This is the low end for field bred springer weight range, where it overlaps the larger cockers.

returned last night from my latest hunt...arrived wed afternoon, finished hunting at dark sat....fairly balmy, birds held pretty tight once the bigger groups were busted up...dog was pointing like a champ! actually shot pretty well! a true blast!!!! 5 of us limited daily...very few birds lost, actually picked up about 6 crips (or dogs trapped them)...all in all, a great december hunt.

As the last weekend approaches of a truly outstanding year it was another invasion of the English Setter.

Lots of snow but moderate temps little wind and a sunny day on Thursday the fist day of 2015

Even tried a few small spots and there were quite a few--very smart--very wild roosters---Right here boss right here--your to slow--should have been here 3 min ago.

Lets go get them

They say a picture is worth 1,000 words-----INDEED---

Today makes 2 outstanding days to start off the new year--I was going to call it quits but then came the knock on the door--how do you say no to a kid who wants to go hunting. I usually bock on this small 4 acre weed plot but told his dad "I've killed lots of birds in my life let the young man have a chance--I just know if we post him right off the end of the old barn he will get a chance."
Don't ya just love when a plan works out.

Good looking habitat ---RIGHT

From the look of the evidence--the pheasants think it's really great

Tomorrow the weather is going to take a nasty turn but that kid still wants to hunt and just how can one say no--:D

Cover looks excellent. Hard to tell but the snow doesn't appear to be too deep? It's been a pleasure following your season!!
