2014 High Plains Drought Monitor

I drove through that yesterday coming back from a hunt test in South Dakota. Things looked real green up there and saw/heard lots of birds. Things are looking up!

Looks like the right places received some much needed moisture this weekend. Hopefully, not too much at one time.

Out here between Barr Lake and Banner Lakes SWA, we received about half an inch to an inch or rain, after dodging all of the storms this past week - didn't receive a drop out of those.

Storm chasing from the safety of my deck ...

Took a trip with my cousin to Colby Ks. yesterday to pick up his new pointing lab Jessie and then drove to our hunting areas to see the land owners and give them our yearly thank you gift. Driving around in Kansas and north of Burlington it is evident that they are doing good on water, the corn is about 10" to 12" and the wheat in some fields is thigh high. Most of the farmers have mentioned seeing more birds then last year at this time which is good so we just need to keep the hail and heat away and it should be a better year.

Those are awesome pictures.

Jakeismydog2,
Thanks! I figured that if the Apocalypse was coming, I should at least get a few pics! :D

Looking better every day. I know the timing of the rain isn't perfect but at least there will be good cover this next season. There's plenty of time for late hatches too!

My friend in North Platte said that they received about 2 inches of rain last night, and month to date, the area has received nearly 7 inches, putting them above average for the year. Looks like the McCook area is catching up as well.

It seems like many areas have caught up, or are quickly catching up with regards to precip. McCook, NE is just above average. Burlington, Lamar, La Junta have made big improvements, but are still below average. North Platte, NE is 10% above average, after being a few inches short at the end of May. Things are looking up a bit ... but we could do without the baseball sized hail.

Speaking of hail, I was headed east on HWY 52 yesterday, into bad weather. It started hailing, and I changed directions, taking the long way home. When I made it to the house, I saw that Fort Lupton had 1.5" hail. Glad that I turned around.

My clover and buckwheat are enjoying the moisture.

It is improving fast. Combines are not moving with all this rain. Rain forecasted for a while. Friend in Kansas got another 1.65" last night and 3" where his combines are sitting. That gives him 12.65" at the farm for June!!! Nebraska got a bunch as well as S.D. and NE Colo.

My wife and I took a drive out to Morgan County today ... wow! CRP, grass, wheat, corn, etc. all look good! I remember taking a drive out that way 2 summers ago ... vegetation was immature and scorched. That was certainly not the case today!

I was in Kansas for several days two weeks ago. ...what I saw:

Central Kansas was looking good. I was all around the Hutchinson area, between Witicha, Salina, etc...they've had tons of rain and boat loads of tall wheat was getting whacked.

Now, western Kansas was nothing near that and really looked no better than the last couple of years imho.

Eastern Colorado also looked considerably better than the last three years!

Here's to continued moisture and no hail!

Uh oh! ...my deer hunting honey hole is now ONLY in the severe drought category! ...first time in years!

What just might be great as well, this can be a honey hole for Eurasian dove in the wet years! Might have to go for it sometime soon!

Much improved. Look at one year ago and the light is at the end of the tunnel.
