2014 High Plains Drought Monitor

Great!!!

Winter Storm Warning
Statement as of 5:48 AM MDT on May 11, 2014
...Winter Storm Warning now in effect until 9 am MDT Monday...

* timing...snow...heavy at times will continue over the northern mountains and foothills. Snow is expected to continue into Monday morning before gradually decreasing by midday.

* Snow accumulations...6 to 12 inches for the valleys...with 12 to 24 inches for the northern Front Range mountains and foothills. Local accumulations up to 3 feet are possible in the mountains of Larimer County.

* Wind/visibility...heavy snow combined with northeast winds up to 30 mph may reduce visibility to less than a quarter mile at times.

* Impacts...roads will become snow covered and some roads in the foothills and mountains may become impassable due to the heavy wet snow. The heavy wet snow will accumulate on leafed out trees and may break some tree limbs...causing power outages. If possible...avoid going under or parking underneath large snow covered tree limbs.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Winter Storm Warning for heavy snow means severe winter weather conditions are expected or occurring. Significant amounts of snow are forecast that will make travel dangerous. Only travel in an emergency. If you must travel...keep an extra flashlight... food...and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency.

my water guage in greeley shows just over 3 1/2 " of moisture, little snow, over the last few days. that's a big relief, don't think much of it got to n.w. kansas though where the wheat and birds need it.

Western Kansas from North to South the Wheat is done unless it was irrigated.
West of Pratt yesterday saw hail 4" in diameter. Just can't buy a break. I consider Pratt to be in the South Central part of the state. So you can imagine how bad it is out West of there as there has been less rainfall. Wheat crop estimates are as bad as they were in 1996 as of May 1st. At this point they need moisture, not for the wheat as it is at a point where moisture most likely will do nothing to help it produce more bushels, but whether or not farmers are going to plant for fall crops, like Milo.

a week ago i was in n. w. kansas and spent some time with the farmer/rancher, the wheat was green but seemed much shorter than usual, i was told that some of the wheat was near stress level but was still too early to tell, don't think they got a lot out of this storm but not sure. will talk to the guy likely tomorrow as i will be in the area, in part to see how much moisture they did get and if it helped the wheat, think the hays news speculated a decrease in winter wheat of about 25%. kinda the pits if you ask me, this drought has reduced the turkey flock in most places by at least 30% from it's high three years ago, so it is not just the pheasant that are feeling it

cheers

wheat

just got back from n. w. kansas, use hwy 34. wheat was sure short, some snow in the ditches. in n. w. kansas much wheat was about 7" tall and was giving off a hint of brownish or yellowish tint, that, i think means it has stopped growing and is starting to head. pretty sad mostly

Call me a conspiracy theorist ... but it seems interesting that the areas in the West experiencing the worst drought just happen to be in the general vicinity of wind farms. Maybe I am crazy ...

Mid Week the pattern is changing and we can look for some good rain from Wed through the weekend!

Mustistuff, If it holds together, looks good for NW Kansas from Goodland into Nebraska tonight for moisture. Tomorrow night looks better for OK and Western Kansas and maybe Thursday.

Yes. Snow pack was 184% as of last week. Still 12-15 feet next to the road on Trail Ridge. Looks like the road is just set straight down into the snow 12-15 feet. No worries about driving off the road. Then heavy rains have worsened the flooding. Expecting heavy rain today and maybe tomorrow. All the rivers are at flood stage or flooding. Sandbagging going on. Larimer County has asked for volunteers for bagging sand and skidsteer operators. A 14 year old boy fell into the Poudre while fishing and his uncle jumped in to save him. Both did not make it. It is unfishable anyway. Wish we had 5 more reservoirs to fill.

Wow, I knew you had a lot of snow this year, but 184%. Looks like you will not be fishing until the end of July. Stay dry.

It will all come down at once!!! Maybe it will wash some fish back into my honey holes that were ruined by the fire ash that came down and turned the river black and killed it. One can hope!!

Looks like another round of rain again today and hopefully it will move north and east.

A friend is staying with us this weekend, who lives in North Platte, NE ... still really dry up there and was envious of the green here.

Ran the dogs at Banner yesterday and the fields just east of Hudson were flooded, but only received about a tenth of an inch 5 miles away at our place.

The buckwheat and clover that I put out in our dirt lot is coming up nice.

I have a file for every storm that has dropped rain and which counties in Colorado, Western Kansas and SW Nebraska. I have a good idea now where to start scouting. Just praying my back heals up. I have missed too much time in the field. Glad your buckwheat is making some head ground. Planted a bunch of legumes on 7 acres( Well, not me I had to watch) and it is growing nicely. Only birds around are Turkey's though. Planted down South @ 6300 ft. Since it went into the ground it has had 38 inches of snow and about 2 inches of rainfall not counting yesterday. I hope the deer lay off for about 2 more months to give it a good chance. I planted some drought tolerant legumes and maybe should of been swamp legumes!!lol S.D got some very nice rain and hope not too much the last 2 days. Maybe some one will chime in that lives around Winner up to the North. Happy Training with the Weims!!

Bleu,

How is the back healing? Do your rehab so you can get back into the field!

They won't let me start just yet. If my x-rays come back good in 2 weeks, they may let me start PT.
