2 year Old GSP Free to good home

The time has come that I have no choice but to give my GSP (white and liver) away to a good home. He is the dog in my avatar pic. Has three months dog training with Steve @Godfather Gundogs. My wife wants him gone and I would rather see him go to a good hunting home than to put him in the humane society. He is not papered but is one of the best looking GSPs around. He is neutered and current on shots. I shot several quail and pheasants over him this past year. He would love to be with someone that can put the extra time in and give him lots of affection. Would make a great hunting companion. He needs plenty of exercise.

There are several GSP rescues in Colorado. What time frame are you looking at?

Scott, have you checked with Steve Chang to see if he might know of someone looking for a dog like yours?

By the way, anyone on this site interested in this dog, I know Steve Chang and he is an excellent trainer and breeder. If he was with Steve for 3 months he should have gotten some very good training. That training alone is worth $2,000. I would think someone would snatch this dog up in a heartbeat.

Good luck. It has to be tough for you to make this decision.

Yes I will let Steve know. ^^^

A few more things. He is ecollar conditioned, loads I kennel command. He also retrieves better than retrievers that I have been around and he likes water.

The issue I am having with him is that he likes to jump fences.

Scott, does he do this when you are home or when you are gone and leave him in the yard???

This has to be tough. My GSP can go over a 6 ft fence faster that you can open the gate and let him out, he'd do it when I didn't excersize him 3 or so days in a row. I pretty much run him every day now, even if only 20 minutes. If its dark out I attach a head lamp to him so I can keep track. One pro I found for this behavior: if anyone takes him he won't be gone to long. Sooner or later an honest person will get him and he'll find his way home. Also I bought 2 ft hi sections of lattice and screwed to to the fence. It helps.

I appreciate the feedback. He does jump a 6 ft privacy fence. Likely because me not getting out with him daily. I have three kids all in sports and it takes up a lot of my time. I would like to keep him if I can figure a way an keep the wife happy at the same time. She has never liked him since day one. She is not a dog lover so it is always a battle. I do have a pointing lab and she can barely tolerate him an he is a good boy.

Scoelki, I feel your pain. My wife, exactly the same. I only have 1 boy, also in sports constantly. One thing we have done is combine activities to include the dogs. We take the dogs to practices and let them run, games, but on leash, we do our long toss program in fields where the dog can run, ect. THere certainly is a commitment of a certain amount of time each day that MUST be spent with the dogs, it becomes habit. If the GSP is a good dog, I'd try everything to keep it, if not, I'd let it go. Last season at a private hunt club, some dentist offered me a good sum of cash for my male after seeing him hunt and how well he responded to commands, (four figures). It made me feel good, but never even considered it. I recently got a 2 yr old female. Had to deal with the wife, now the dogs NEVER come in the house. That helped out on that end somewhat. Keep us posted...

Scott..

Good day,

I may be interested. I am taking Cassidy, my 11 yr old GSP to the Vet for surgery this morning. Over the weekend a Mast Tumor popped through her skin near her butt cheek. Depending on the outcome, I may be very interested in something that works for both of us.. I am in Longmont, so very near..

Goatman

My brother is in the same situation as Goatman. He may be intrested also, if shipping the Dog to Sacramento is a financially doable option....

It's always hard to give up a pet, especially in this situation. I had a girlfriend who hated my GSP, and my GSP is extremely well behaved and loving. If any dog or item took attention away from her or her shelti, she hated it.....so one day she made a comment " You'd choose your dog over me!" ....i replied "Yup" and left her lol.
By no means am I hinting at anything towards anyones marriages, i know it can be tough with dogs and families, but in my situation, her just being a girlfriend who hated one of my biggest hobbies....that was not a good sign!

If I hadnt just put a deposit on a new german wirehair puppy I might even have been interested! I have 10 acres for my dog to run, and even raise some pheasants to practice with. I wish you the best of luck in finding him a good home!!

My wife says the same things about me and my dogs, she thinks I put the dogs before her. She calls them my girlfriends, allways claiming how much she hates them ect. Some of it is bullshit, some is reasonable. I don't blame her for not wanting shedding animals in the house, they make a mess in the yard every now and then. One bullshit rant is she is canstantly complaining that they stink. They don't. They are bathed every week and their pillow coverings are washed every Sunday, they have more than 1 pillow each, ect. The wives don't understand the commitment to being a bird dog owner, and I can understand that. But.... there is an underlying issue.... self esteem, self confidence, a jealousy issue, ect and I get that. This is fact, if you have 1 dog, there is no difference having 2. Sometimes I think mine just makes up stuff to grip about. Another fact... Bird dogs don't bitch, always happy to see me, do what I ask of them, no complaints, good communicators, never have to bail them out of jail, but, I do love my wife, best mother my 12 yr old could ask for. And shes a damn good cook. If she could just find birds.......

Scoelki,

I think our daughters hang out together sometimes and have met your wife?? Not sure though, but when me and my wife met your wife she saw my English Setter and told us about her husbands fence jumping GSP..... lol, she too wasn't a fan!!

My Setter doesn't jump our fences, but he has plenty of energy he burns off with my wife's Golden Retriever puppy. If you want to possibly hang on to your dog you could try dropping him by my place a few times a week to burn off his energy.
My Setter just turned 2 years old, and the Retriever is 6 months old. All they do is chase each other, wrestle, and chase every bird out of my yard! Not a mean bone in their body!!

Just a thought!

It's hard for me to find the time to run dogs everyday too, so for me it really helps to have 2 dogs that keep each other occupied and in shape.
