    Stevens 560 opinions, insights, experiences

Stevens has a new shotgun out this year a very inexpensive semi auto. I had a Stevens side by side when I was a kid and really shot that gun well and put a lot of rounds through it. I am looking for a good back up gun and would like to hear from anyone who has handled one of these.

    3rd Eastern Oregon Trip.

Most of eastern Oregon is public land. We typically have OnX with us and stop when we find public land that looks right and go hunting. Better than 1/2 the time we find quail and chukar in the same habitat.

    3rd Eastern Oregon Trip.

Had a pretty incredible trip to Oregon. I shared the only picture of the trip from the 2nd day. Lots of birds around and even managed to kill a few chukar. My dog is a 6 year old Griffon and she had a couple of really great breakthroughs this season. She was able to point and hold several...

    A different kind of Thanksgiving

My wife and I decided to get away from civilization for Thanksgiving, so we went to Lake Powell. The weather was pretty good for this time of year. It rained one day and was clear and about 50 degrees for the remainder. Lots of striped bass and lots and lots of shad. Caught fish in two types of...

    2nd Trip to Eastern Oregon

Had an interesting 2nd trip to Eastern Oregon. We had a great first day. I limited on roosters (2 birds) and limited on quail (10 birds). So, on day two we decided to go back to a Wildlife Management Unit south of Drewsey Valley (west of Juntura). We hunted it a couple of years ago and there...

    All My Shotguns

I bought my first shotgun at 15. I was working on a farm in eastern Oregon and saved up my entire summers wages to buy a Niko 12 gauge pump back in 1983. It fit me well and I shot it for years and shot it well. Since then I have bought and sold many shotguns, not as a collector but trying to...

    Blood Lust

It was pretty incredible. 4 of us went, we stayed 3 days and killed 120 quail (limit), 9 roosters and 1 Hungarian partridge. If you need some help to some general locations let me know. The Huns were a surprise. We kicked up three coveys of Huns and got one. I found a spot that had more...

    Where to go in December?

If anyone is interested in a different upland experience check out eastern Oregon. Lots of quail and chukar on public land. Fairly liberal limits, 10 quail and 8 chukar daily.

    Blood Lust

Eastern Oregon is absolutely a riot for quail and chukar. This last weekend we were commonly seeing coveys of 50 birds and ran across one covey that easily had 100 birds in it. What was pretty cool was the number of quail that still had pin feathers, they were tiny and could barely fly.

No sir. I was hunting along Hwy 20 for two partial days though. I was in a grey Nissan Titan. I tried for some mountain quail on my way east from Portland. I saw 6 or so of the wily little guys but they are pretty spooky. They started running when I got within 100 yards and flew when I got...

Good luck, I am headed to Portland to visit some family and then hunt my way back to eastern Oregon. I am hoping to find a Mountain quail or two. They are on my bucket list. Let me know if you need any directions.

Good luck. If you have a little extra time, check out the Weiser area, especially the draws along the Snake River and Brownlee Reservoir. Lots of quail and chukar. Most importantly, it is all public land.

I have never seen a survey on Huns in Oregon. Odd, because every now and then, I run into a few. Not many, but a few.

I'll be in the area the 25th. If you need some with some birdy locations let me know.

Why is deer hunting so popular?

Being a westerner for my entire life, I can only provide that perspective. Big game hunting has changed from what it was when I was 12 (my first year hunting big game) to now 40 plus years later. Back then, hunting big game was strictly for the meat. We hunted a lot of doe deer and cow elk...

How to get better at wingshooting

Wow, all great advice. All that I can add is that when I started hunting I struggled and my Dad, who was a solid shooter, gave me two tips. 1. Pheasants are very slow birds so, when hunting over a dog, let the bird have at least a 3 count before you pull the trigger. 2. Always swing through...

As hunting season has arrived, I find myself amazed that after 40 plus years of hunting and fishing pretty much anything that swims, flies or runs, I still get amped up like a kid on Christmas Eve!!! I still have trouble sleeping the night before a hunting or fishing trip!! I still spend...

What are you doing to get ready for the upcoming season?

I am reloading enough shells to get me through another year and hoping that reloading components are more available than in past years.
