    It's spring in Calif

I saw the first flight of Sandhill Cranes heading NE toward Freezeout Res. in Montana. It's always fall when they arrive from the NE and it's always spring when they leave to the NE. I'd guess it will take them about a month to get there.

Information about Upland Game Bird funds

Here's info from DFW's site describing the types of projects that the fund is supposed to support. If you look at Fish and Game Code Section 3683 which defines upland birds you'll find Collard Doves on the list. When I worked for a public agency I always found it easy to make us look foolish...

After the youth hunt at Nelson Slough

A friend went there this AM to see about doing a clean up on the youth hunts planted birds. There were 25 vehicles parked there. He kept right on driving.

500 miles per bird, 2,000 miles per fish

I'm back from Montana with 4,000 miles on my truck and a yet to be totaled charge on my credit card. It was a less than knee slapping good time but it did have its moments. I fished three bodies of water and caught a couple of yellow perch but the pike, trout walleyes and Burbot didn't...

    It's officially Fall

I know it's over 90 degrees but the first flights of Sandhill Cranes flew over the house today heading South to the Cosumnes River Preserve and all their other wintering spots. That's how I mark the start of fall.

For those who hunt the wildlife areas

Due to the drought, quotas have been reduced and areas closed for the duck season opener and potentially on into the season. Here's a list of the reduced quotas and closed areas that they should up date periodically. If you apply for a reservation for an area that is closed you get no refund. No...

    It's raining!

Enough rain up here to make the little drainage cuts around the house foundation run some water. This should really help on the King fire if not stop its spread if they got the same amount. Looked out the window to see a young buck with a single forked antler. The other side is just a 2" nasty...

    Wildlife area tour

I hunted doves on the opener and looked at several N. valley wildlife areas. All were extremely dry with almost no green veg. visible. Pheasant production on the areas should be about zero. The place I hunted last year that had Sudan grass and moist soil was fallowed and just sparse Star...

Some depressing info about Calif. pheasants

This isn't new and may have been mentioned before but the DFG site has two pdf files showing pheasant harvest on the wildlife areas over a period of time. They have some nice line graphs that really says it all. Here's the link to the page. Go down to the publications list. Have a couple of...

    BMA info available online

It looks like at least two of the BMAs I hunted last year aren't in the program this year. I hope it's not a trend. Of course I now have a new Mac mini that is much harder to use to get the info from DFWP's website than my old pc so I could be wrong.

non-toxic shot required for all game bird hunting in Calif.

I recall that DFW is supposed to come up with a schedule for the complete prohibition of lead shot for game bird hunting in Calif. with a due date of 2015. Does anyone know how that is going? I was hoping they'd exclude doves and quail but don't think they did.

How far South in Calif. have you shot wild birds

Over 50 years ago when I first got my drivers license my mom and I met her sister and my uncle at Mendota to hunt pheasants. My aunt and uncle would drive up from Moorpark to hunt pheasants there and it was a great place for wild birds. That was long enough ago that you bought a pheasant license...

The end of the season for me

I took Nancy and Morgan to a wildlife area for the last walk of the season. I haven't hunted since opening weekend because I shot enough birds then. We walked around and Morgan got birdy but found nothing. I took her to a place that I thought would hold birds but she didn't seem impressed. We...

    30' X 60' metal building for sale

30' X 60' metal building that has never been erected. I bought it new 20 years ago and the plans fell apart but the building hasn't. Ribbed quonset style construction but with vertical sides and a soft peak. Open ends so it can be finished the way you want or not at all and used as a shelter...

    It's official, Fall is here

I heard the first flight of Sandhill Cranes go over yesterday. Now it's fall and hunting season can begin.

Federal shutdown and public land hunting

For those of you going to hunt Tule Lake or Lower Klamath for this weekends waterfowl opening you'd better check before you drive up there. The notice below was on their website this morning and now you can't even get to the Lower klamath NWR web site. It's all shut down. The notice would seem...

Federal lands close due to shutdown

For those of you planning to hunt on land administered by the federal government this notice was on their website for two large federal refuges here in Calif. It looks like it would apply country wide so you'd better check before you hunt anything the feds control which is a bunch of Montana. In...

Missing maps in BMA Access Guides

I had difficulty getting the BMA Hunting Access Guide this year using their internet request page. Because I didn't get the books I ordered in July when the Aug 15 availability date had passed, I re-ordered a complete package in both my name and address and my fiance's name and address. I've...

    Doves

OK, it's a pheasant forum so think of them as little gray pheasants. I made my first scouting trip in preparation for opening day and found very few of them and some bad info on the web about areas. A site that speaks with authority says that safflower and sunflower food plots were planted on...

    Pheasant opener later this year?

I was looking at the opening dates for pheasants and deer and planning my trip and find FWP has moved the pheasant opener back one week to the 12th which is now the same as N.Dakota. Although out of state hunters can't hunt public land in N.Dakota for the first week of the season, private land...
