Do you take a poke at the long range birds ?

Man oh man, I didn't realize how many passionate folks are on this forum. Thanks for not getting angry at me!! Lol.

This post was pretty entertaining, much like a soap opera. I can't believe that so many people never lose a bird when they are hunting. So, do you count a leg dropped bird as a miss or a lost bird?? I consider myself a fair shot but I do lose a bird once in a while.

As far as whether I would take a long shot (over 40 yards). The only time that I might take that shot is if I started shooting at them closer and miss, or drop a leg. Perhaps it's adrenaline? Perhaps it out of fear that I have hit the bird already and that sinking feeling in my gut when I feel that I am not being a good sportsman by not trying to kill the bird?? Perhaps it that I don't want to let me dog down?? I'm not sure whether it's ethical or not but I will tend to shoot a third time if I've missed twice.
These people on here that say they have never lost a bird, or shot of hen,or dumped mud in a parking area, are not telling the truth. Everybody loses birds, it's just part of bird hunting. And yes you do fire three times.

I’d like a do-over from yesterday..,straight overhead bird, maybe 25-30 yards…bad miss. Damn…I’m the pitcher, it’s coming from home plate, heading to center field…😬

Several years ago I was mentoring a new bird hunter who said his auto wasn't cycling the shells at all. He handed it to me and sure enough, it was not ejecting the fired shell. When I checked, the shells, they were low-base skeet loads from when we practiced on skeet. I asked him why he was using those, and he thought they were ok. I asked if he thought he hit any birds he shot at that day, and he said a couple might have "wiggled" a bit but never fell. Obviously, we had a long talk afterwards about specifics of successful bird hunting tactics and ammo.

Oh, man that is my favorite shot!!! It's the center station in skeet! I don't make a good shot every time, but I sure laugh when I do.

I got a few do-overs on the trip…3-4 more! At least 1 miss, but a couple good kills that came down and damn near hit me! It’s always a strange feeling holding my gun where I do on those…I hold above the bird, and they fall…not sure if I’m even swinging with the bird…usually I’m crouching down trying to be stealthy, and I stand up and shoot…maybe I have 1-2 seconds to mount and shoot?

I'm proud of myself for passing on some shots recently that 10 years ago I would have taken. I'm more disciplined now or at least I'm getting there.
Same here. I’m much more selective. I’m definitely the kind of person that likes to get out in the fields and watch the dog work. Bagging a bird or two is icing on the cake.
