Well it was a somewhat cooler day today so I decided to fill up the backpack sprayer with Remedy and start spot spraying my Sericia Lespedeza. Sprayed a total of 6 gallons on Sericia, thistles and a fair amount of mulit-flora rose. Seen a lot of rabbits, jumped a fawn and a brood of quail...

Yep, this habitat work is starting to pay off, literally!!

I've tried to keep you all up to date on my habitat projects this year which included planting 750 shrubs, clearing cedars from a 2 acre hillside area and establishing 6 downed tree structure areas. Well I got everything done and my local Missouri Dept. of Conservation Private Lands Rep came by...

    Whistle counts/sightings

Went out the other morning to do a whistle count and I was pleasantly suprised at what I heard. I went to 5 different spots and heard quail at 3 of them and at 2 of those spots I heard multiple quail. And I was talking to a neighbor and he's been hearing birds and then just today here at work I...

    Quail chicks already?

Was on another site just now and a guy posted on there that a turkey hunter spotted a female with chicks on May 5th! This seems way early for chicks.

Yep, I think its finally starting to work!!

I was outside this evening doing a bit of spraying and heard several different quail whistleing around the house. I was out by the road standing next to my fence whistleling back to a couple of them and the neighbor was driving by and he stopped in the road to tell me he'd been hearing and...

    Killing foxtail in NWSG

Like the title says, I've got some thin areas of little blue and side oats and the foxtail is really really thick in places. I'd like to thin it out a bit and see if my LB and SO will thicken up. What can I use that wont kill the NWSG?

    Bobwhite whistle ?

Had several males whistleing around the farm here and when I whistle back, they might respond once and then they pretty much shut up. Any ideas as to why? My whistle is pretty good, just got me curious as to why they wont talk back much.

    A Little More Habitat Work

Well I spent Sunday, Monday, Tuesday and part of Wednesday with a dibble bar and 750 shrub seedlings that I'd ordered from the MDC nursery. Had a little help on Monday with a fellow QUWF member and we probably planted a couple hundred in about 3 hours and then I spent all day Tuesday and got all...

Believe it or not, I was out walking some of my fields today and I've got sprigs of green about 2 to 3 inches long down in the middle of my little blue clumps.

    Herbicide usage-Too much of a good(or bad)thing?

One thing that I've come to notice over the several years of doing habitat improvement work here on my farm and in helping others with theirs, is that we as "conservationist" get caught up in wanting our plots to look like a production ag field. And I admit when I first started planting food...

Coldest night of the year so far.

Well tonight will be a test of the small covey of quail thats been hanging around the house here lately. With only 5 or 6 birds in it and with temps expected to dip down to about 7 degrees, they might have a hard time keeping warm enough. Sure hope the little bugers make it.
