I think I like shooting the other green headed ring necked bird of North America just as much as pheasants. I got in two hunts before the season closed in my zone this year and now I'm hooked!

I'll post a couple pics later today

I have never hunted waterfowl, but would love to try it, especially duck hunting.

The first day I went out I was actually trying to pass shoot some geese coming off a local sand pit and ended up having a flock of mallards come over top and me. I got 2 out of that and I found where they were landing on the river. That night I got my decoys set up and went out early the next morning. I ended up bagging 3 drakes on the first day of the year. Not a limit but its better than I had done earlier in the season and its the most mallards I've bagged in my life. Usually its a mix of teal, gadwall and pintails.

The other picture without the snow is from teal season. The dog and I went out after work one day and limited out in about 20 minutes. it took me longer to set the decoys up and walk out/in then it did to actually "hunt"

Pityis the mallards just got here in great numbers. The late zone Kansas season opens again for 9 glorious days on the 23rd. Enjoy! I will!

I find waterfowling tough by yourself. But it is highly addictive. I started out as a youth hunting ducks and geese with my uncles, but not regularily. We would pass shoot geese and once or twice a year decoy them in on a wheat field. But I never got into duck hunting much since I am a terrible caller and its not the easiest sport to do on your own. I stumbled on this spot on the local river. All I have to do is sit out about a dozen decoys and just wait for them to come in. Calling was not necessary. I'm no expert but in my opinion its easier to decoy ducks in when the water has frozen and they are searching for open water to land on. I plan on river hunting ducks next season as much as possible. I'll be an expert by this time next year

Very nice post. I like skinning my ducks and putting them in a glass bread baking dish. I put a layer of onoins or apples on the bottom of the pan (I use no water) laying the bird breast down and I use a rub on the duck and bake it at 350 for an hour and a half. I cover the dish with aluminum foil and fold the sides down as tight as possible. Wow, is it delicious! Heading out in the am but doubt if I'll be done in 20 minutes. Hopefully I can come up with a couple of birds.

That sounds tasty! I'll have to try that next time. I had my brother-in-law jerk my last batch of ducks and geese and had hunting snacks for a couple weeks. These last birds I shot I filet-ed the breasts and I plan on grilling them. My grandma has a good recipe she let me borrow.

The 23rd of Jan? Can NR get this license as well? I may very well take a week off work and head on down.

I'm not sure, I think all that is needed is an NR license and a state and federal waterfowl stamp. I'm not sure if there are any stipulations for a NR getting a state stamp or not. And correction the season reopens the 22nd-30th

Yeah you and webguy both. I took him up to North Dakota and he said he wasn't interested in shooting ducks and would just film us. After one day of watching us hammer ducks he made us drive to Jamestown to buy him a license. This is what happened next day. That's webguy on the right.
