Beware: Snakes & Prairie Dog Towns

Makes sense, if you kill the ones that give a warning rattle and the only ones that reproduce are the ones that don't rattle.....well, the offspring just won't rattle. I'm no biologist, but it sounds logical to me.

We've ran into snakes the past two years in Ulysses on Opening Weekend. They've been in the same CRP field and I'm vowing to not hunt there this year unless the temps cool off. One was a bull snake and the other was a footlong rattle snake. I was thinking maybe we'd hunt the feed fields this year in the afternoon it's still warm out Opening Weekend. My thinking is the snakes would less likely be in the cultivated stuff as opposed to the grass. What do you guys think?

I've seen snakes in the crop fields, but never a rattler (though I'm sure they pass through just the same). The nice thing about the crop fields is that you can see much better than CRP (I know capt. obvious). Either way, if we break about 70 degrees, I'll be driving the backroads talking about pheasant hunting instead of doing it. I simply cannot stand snakes and the hunting isn't good enough to risk it in those temps IMO.

KB,
I'm right there with you on not wanting to hunt when it's 70 degrees. I love Opening Weekend, but it's not worth tip toeing through the fields worried everytime the dog starts making sent. They need some rain out West or it's going to be a rough one on the dogs.

Yes Sir, you're exactly right. Dusty days w/ no scent trails are TOUGH!!

vets

Does anyone know who has that vaccine for your dogs around KC? I have been callin around and can't find it anywhere ..even called KSU Vet school. Also it is real dry out west and the 90 day forecast per the farmer said hot and dry...so take lots of water for your pups and you. If it is over 70 will be at Sue's Cozy Tavern in La Crosse watchin the games.

If it hits 70 by noon, we'll get the chance to meet that w/e:cheers:

No doubt. If it's that hot, we'll be seeking a/c and cold beers. I didnt' get to hunt the KS opener last year because of a friend's wedding, but I hunted in Missouri and it was plenty hot that weekend! On Sunday it was like 90 by 11:30 or something close to it. We're packing fishing rods this year. If it's hot, I am hitting the river.

River? They got one in W KS?:D

Don't you guys have someone who does snake avoidance training nearby? If I only had $50 and the choice of the vaccine or avoidance training I'd do the training.

I personally have snake avoidance instinct....no need to get myself trained:rolleyes: Seriously, my problem is a terrible fear of snakes. I scream like a girl when I see them unexpectedly....always have.

I to scream like a girl when a snake is found not a pretty site a 6 foot 300 pound man running and screaming for his life but i have never been bitten with this type of tactic

Me too

Can't stand snakes of any kind. If I see a snake all you see is my butt and elbows cause in am headin in the other direction. That is why I hunt no snake in the winter.

save me a seat at Sues.

You guys crack me up! Lions, tigers, bears, and.... snakes??? What else can we talk about to freak out out-of-staters?

Is there any official record of the number of human or dog fatalities during hunting season due to snakebite? I bet it's zero or nearly zero. How about an official number of snake bites during hunting season? I bet it's close to zero also.

I would also guess that 50 times more hunts are ruined due to dogs getting heatstroke, or torn up by barbed wire fences, hit by passing cars, just plain running off, stomped by the farmer's cows, or  getting shot by their hunting party.

No offense intended to the group, but I would like to see some hard data that has been compiled by biologists, ER docs, and/or vets. I will not make fun of you guys for your fear of snakes. I have some... uh... idiosyncracies of my own... but seriously, somewhere deep inside you have to know that the snake danger is minimal.

Maybe I am a little biased because my hunting season starts in earnest in December. I don't hunt too much in the heat because it's uncomfortable for me and too hot for the dogs. I LOVE to hunt when it is snowing...

There haven't been many deadly snake bites in KS period in the past 100 years. Yes, Imapuss when it comes to snakes. Give me a 2,000lb. bull and I'll ride it till it lies down, spuring hair off it the entire way. Spiders....I'll eat them if they ain't poisonous.....I've just never been able to get over the snake thing and I've had a few close encounters fishing......can't watch the horizon for birds and look down for snakes. Just can't man up enough to get out when I know snakes could be out.

Told my wife yesterday not to open the freezer. She asked "Why, what have you put in there now?"

Toad, don't forget to come by in December, I don't know how long I can keep her out of there. :)
