Perfect Storm for SD Harvest?

Holy buckets look at the 10 day forecast and we got 2 days in the 80's and a day or 2 where the winds are up in the 20's a crops are going to dry down quick. Chance of rain about this time next week but this is a real nice stretch of weather. I bet they get most of the beans out by this time next week and probably some corn but most farmers leave corn to dry down if they have beans to finish harvesting yet.

The harvest numbers were behind the 5 year average but beans will surpass it and then hopefully corn will too after the beans come out.

I think if the corn can stay ahead of the 5 year average the pheasant season in SD will be stellar. So far so good.

Talked to a guy in my dad's hardware store Saturday and he said straight out of the field corn was at 12.9%. He said he should rig a hose up to get the percentage up a little bit and add some weight.

VZW, that is interesting point. I think they only dock you when it is above 15 or 16% so I could see where a guy could go backwards if it is too dry. What a difference a year makes.

Well, east of hwy 81 things are slow due to the rains they had a week or so ago but west of 81 I've never seen so much combining.

I would say beans are all but done and now corn is next. My operator will finish beans this week and then will start on corn. Only been one other year when crops were out this early.

Saw a lot more birds out and about tonight than all of last time I was here.

I suspect this opener will be outstanding.

corn was averaging 14%-16% here when most of the farmers were harvesting... i just hope most of the hunt grounds have more cover than the crops being harvested... roosters are gonna want cover and not be standing in a corn cut field in the open.

for example, my dad cut 90% of the hay this year and didnt get any Corn or even Beans in some fields resulting a very wet spring, we may not see as many birds in OUR field per say... so i may have enuf strip for 2 people to hunt, but no more than 2 ppl.

im also hearing that we are gonna have a wet Nov and possible a repeat snow of what we got last year.

Thanks CO and I hope you guys have a great weekend.

Rusty, todays combine have checkers right in the system and they readout moisture as the go. They also make hand held units where you can shuck a few kernels and put them in the checker. I have one of these.

what sucks about getting a hand moisture tester is they run 500.00-900.00 a pop... and you use it only during harvest.

newer and newer combines are coming with those.. but again, new combines can be 225,000.00 and expensive!

my wife's dad has an OLD OLD moisture tester, i swear it looks like a nuculear machine, instead of a digital meter to tell you the %... this has a dial and when the needle meets 0, thats what % your corn is.
