Help Needed :)

You already have some good information but I will add this. With no dog I would focus on an area away from Mitchell or Pierre. Those are decent sized towns and while they offer much as far as restaurants and lodging, they also get pounded on a daily basis by travelers. If you do choose one of these plan on driving an hour or so in a different direction every morning till you find birds. Most casual hunters won’t do this. Read up on the ditch hunting regulations so you stay legal. If you hunt fields focus on edges and corners close to feed if possible. Don’t be afraid to walk. Finally if you have three boys you have some good flushers. A couple days busting those cattails and they will know they were hunting. Finally don’t forget some steel shot and know where you need to use it. My neighbor and four friends found this out the hard way back in October

The first pheasant hunt I ever went on was right out of college and I was invited to go to Nebraska with an old farmer from home. He’d spent the summer picking and shelling pecans and bagged them in 1-gal ziplocks to offer the folks whose doors he knocked on for permission. Brings back good memories.

Your trip sounds like one I would have loved when I was your kids’ age. You will make memories that last a lifetime!

Good advice, I’m based 20-25 miles from Mitchell, and hunting pressure has been more modest than most years…just got home 2 days ago, I couldn’t believe the modest pressure, especially with the nice weather. It was deer opener, but I’m always out there that weekend. I threw out many locations, varying distances from Mitchell, for example. Mainly, I suggested locations I did because bird #’s are good. I like the idea of having some other attractions and activities, given the age of your boys. All input here has been good, good luck, and report back!!! 👍

It must have slowed down… I was there during the week of the first week in November on my way home from North Dakota and the hotels were packed.

My bad, don’t know about the hotels…they may be…I’ve just noticed fewer hunters…at least in my areas…I ask the C store cashiers, bars, vet clinic…most agree hunter #’s are soft for the time of year…for sure pretty busy first few weeks, but not as bad as last year…you’re right, general travel traffic probably high in the bigger towns in SD with Turkey Day…

Motels are a rip off, but it's best to get your own room I learned that a long time ago.

Are you still always camp, and split a room with his friend of mine we used to hunt a lot late season, well he's deceased for the last 10 years or so so I generally get my own room but I will share a room with my nephew or cousin. If you don't know someone really really really well, don't share a room with them because you won't have a good time.
 
Merlebo 02. You’ve seen the forecast I assume?

I IMG_9856.jpegwent to Chamberlain yesterday on a quick one day trip before the weather sets in for Thanksgiving. I fished from 8 am till 12:40 pm and never heard a shot in the distance. It was flat calm out so it surprised me that I didn’t hear any shooting. Took the boat back to the cabin (2 walleyes)and loaded up Sky and headed west to hunt south of Presho. Shot 2 birds in 45 minutes on private property. Surprisingly. I never heard a shot in the distance, nor did I see another hunter in the field, or on the road. It was actually kind of bizarre the lack of hunting pressure. There’s birds out there, both wild and ranch birds. I drove a 2 mile stretch of road (with no houses on it) during the golden hour and I bet I seen 30 birds on the road. All ranch birds I assumed, which I have little interest in as I don’t road hunt. (Nothing against it)

I just tell people, look if you want to hunt with me, that's fine we can do that, but I'm not going to share a room with you, because I want to have my sleep, and don't need somebody cramping my style. Also, some people take pheasant hunting way way too seriously, and those people are idiots.

I’m trying to figure out Goose’s line between grab ass and way to seriously. It appears to be a pretty narrow area to stay in. 😂
