Bird Numbers - Bowdle (Edmunds County)

I live in the middle of Edmunds county. The numbers here are clearly better than last year. If there is cover for nesting there should be birds. Different areas have different rain and hail so it could be different there.

Good to hear been hunting the Hoven /Tolstoy and vicinity for 25 yrs. or so--Try to make it up to Bowdler at least once to have dinner at Terry and Carries restaurant in what I believe is the old hospital building it is I believe

Is that your operation that is based of that location?

I too hunt the area as well as Edmonds and Faulk Co, what I want to know is what is the water situation, do most of the stock tanks have water ? how is water in Swan lake ? and what do the crops look like are they ready for harvest? Our problem is none of us live close enough to get there until the days before the season begins.
Thanks
Glynn

There will be less water than last year. I hear Hoven area is quite dry. I do not know about swan lake. A friend of mine from Hoven told me the crops were shot quite awhile ago. I would believe harvest will be earlier unless it turns wet.

No I am about 20 miles east of there.

I am from Ohio and have been hunting the Bowdle area for the last 16 years.
Based on the brood survey I expect some poor hunting this year.
Sounds like it will be dry and some of the crops are poor.
For the first time in 16 years I am thinking about staying home.

WHY???? Would you do that???

Great trip-

Great country

Great people

Great times

Still plenty of birds compared to any where else in country

Could lose past /present contacts to others

It's the journey and the above that counts JMHO

Don't listen to haymaker the guy with feet on the ground stay home that's the only 100% sure way not to kill any pheasants or make any memories out in SD just don't go...

If its so dry find water u will find birds scout 1 day to locate water worth it the next 4 days otherwise walk same old crp & don't see birds...

I have been making memories in South Dakota for quite a few years now and have hunted in all the down years.
I have a two teenagers that have been going out ever since that were old enough to hunt with me.
I just hate to travel 21 hours with 4 dogs to hunt our butts off and the kids get very little action.

Write on bet u will remember not going more then a tuff hunt???

I would not go if I needed to be convinced to go I feel the same way about ND I find it hard to travel 8-10 hours with a group of guys for maybe 2-3 birds per 6-7 guys in 6-7 days hunting...

Do u only hunt this 1 county or area or have u looked around for greener pastures etc. I. Curious because if u feel its bad state wide I better stick wear I've been I see enuff birds to keep a group coming out I have 6-8 guy group going this year hope its OK hunt is all we need

I am not telling anyone to come or not come. Our bird numbers will be up, but that will vary. If you know where there is habitat you should be fine. Are you hunting public? I wish you well what ever you decide.

I wish well as well on your decision--was not being critical on my other post-

I do wish though I could go back in time and have my two boys be teenagers again and be headed for Dakota with their dad for some quality time--

Regards. D.c.

Im entering that part of life. Except I travel with a little girl. Well she's now 13. Trained her first dog this year. Loves to hunt. They say girls will battle their dad as they get older but this one loves to hunt and as d.c. said I wouldnt trade a single hunting trip I;ve taken with her, good or bad. It's good to have kids humbled on hunts. Otherwise they get spoiled. They appreciate the good hunts more. Last year we had a hunt where we got 1 bird in 6 hours. Only saw one covey all day. While I was scrambling trying to get to as many fields as possible to find birds, she said, "dad I think the hot weather has em scattered and it's 60 degrees, the pups are getting hot. Temperature is supposed to drop tonight, it will be better tomorrow." I smiled and we went back to the truck and back to the hotel. The next day we got 9 quail and 3 pheasants.

PheasantWhisperer,

The statement, "It's good to have kids humbled on hunts. Otherwise they get spoiled. They appreciate the good hunts more", is very true.
The problem I have is spending $2000 and 9 days (4 days of travel) to accomplish this lesson.

We are fortunate that we live in an agricultural area here in NE Ohio and my kids and I either hunt/fish for something almost WEEKLY! Believe me, my kids get their share of humbling!

The only reason I started this post was to get a pheasant report for Edmunds county.

Call a state game & fish biologist & ask them in 1st few pages of hunting atlas is numbers for each region... They will tell u basic info & or to call a local warden for boots on ground info... I've done it for many hunts in many states...

So u only hunt Edmonds county maybe try SW of there along MO river I'm sure some guy will help u out if u have 2,000$ to play with...

Happy hunting this season you seem like a very humble guy...

Good idea! But I didn't appreciate the humble crack.

The $2000 is what it cost my two sons and myself to be on the road for 9 days. Fuel, hotels, food, and hunting licenses.
Do the math.

We hunt for free on private land at our destination, approximately 4000 acres scattered around the Bowdle area.

I get a kick out of some folks you meet on these forums.

The best part about SD is that it pulls thousands of MN hunters (make that 10s of thousands) west for many days ... leaving my home state much quieter and less pressured.
