Just had my fifth hunting day (thankfully not in a row) of the KS season of not firing a shot. If my huntin' buddy takes his months old dog to a bird ranch to let her know there are actually birds involved in bird hunting I will go too. Otherwise, I think I'm done - other than maybe shooting another turkey. :eek:

We have actually had a good season. Probably moved 150 birds on Thursday. 2 weeks ago my son and I shot a limit in less than 2 hours. We hunt lots of private land but got into a mess on WIHA ground last week. Plan on hunting every weekend from here on out. What is funny is that we have not seen anyone else hunting pheasants since the day before Thanksgiving. Been great for my little 14 month old female.

You have been going NW to hunt. If you like quail there are some fine covers close to home. You will see birds.

I have hunted my last ruffed grouse hunt here in Tennessee every time I have hunted for the last 12 years! I swear it off every time. Cant seem to quit. It is tough to go on armed hikes every time.
 
New to Kansas

If anyone can possibly help me with certain areas or locations as to where to turkey hunt or pheasant hunt that would much appreciated. I am a new college student to Kansas (Kansas City) and am looking for places to turkey and pheasant hunt. I have tried to fill my fall turkey tag for the past month and have had no luck. I have been hunting at Les Cygnes, Marais Des Les Cygnes, and Rutlader and haven't even seen a Turkey. Any help would be awesome. Thanks!
 
Pheasants go at least 2 hours west. Turkeys are everywhere. Pick up a WIHA atlas and enjoy roaming around looking at spots. Can be a lot of fun!

Keen, with all the traffic on our public hunting areas in the fall, most of the turkey move off onto private land where it is a lot quieter. Often they move in where farmers are feeding cattle and where good crops are available. Duckn is shooting straight in that you will need to drive a couple of hours just to start finding roosters in any numbers. 3-4 hours and you'd be more in the thick of things for pheasants.

Consider changing how you look at it. Each grouse you encounter is a bigger trophy than the famed 30 point buck! If we solely took satisfaction from the numbers in the bag, we'd all be fatter and know more about football stats of the year. Keep chasing them! I've been trying to get a Kansas doodle for years. I've shot at 1 and seen more when I'm doing other things than when I'm looking for them. The chase won't be so keen once I take the first one.

Esetter and drifter you need to hit the lake states to chase your grouse and Timberdoodles, especially during the migration. Nothing like trying to shoot little rockets in dense woods.
 
I am not ready to be done. But my wife and some "friends" booked a trip for before the end of the month. Who does that during bird season.

So my son and Sil will likely take my dogs out and hunt while I am gone.

My last several times out I have gotten into a good number of quail. Not sure that I have pulled the trigger all season on a pheasant.

Would like to make one more trip out to the SW before the season ends, but not sure that I can make that happen.
 
We've got one more hunt in us for the year. Have gone west twice for the season and did well enough to justify another 300 mile drive for me.

My wife and I are leaving for Hawaii Friday to celebrate out 25th anniversary. When I get back the 25th, I plan on spending the rest of season in the Ness, Finney, Ford, Hodgeman, Scott, Lane county area. I have done quite well every time I have been so far. It may be an abrupt change in climate, depending on what the end of Jan. brings for weather out there.
 
After getting blanked in the doe season (embarrassing), I'm ready for a change of pace. I have three more day trips for pheasants/quail in the works. And one of my sons wants to try duck hunting. Not my cup of tea, but I have some gear and I'll take him if there's some liquid water the weekend of Jan 23-24.
 
I hunted the Atwood/Mcdonald/Colby area and we did well on private land, so-so on WIHA. They were very jumpy though - even on private land that had not been pressured since opening weekend. Good news is we bagged some quail. First we saw up there in a good long while. We saw close to 100 birds in 3 days.
 
We had a rough hunt a couple weeks ago, so naturally we're going to give it one more chance next Friday. Have some private ground south of Woodston and we're dumb enough to have a day trip planned. Probably going to have to leave around 0300, but hopefully we get into the several coveys of quail that are usually there. After that I guess we'll work our way back east hitting an occasional WIHA property, or just call it a day depending on how good the private ground is. Last hunt of the year so I'm praying we get into at least one covey, shot enough pheasants opening weekend that I'm good until next year on them.
