UGUIDE Rooster Road Trip starts tomorrow...

Here's the agenda gentlemen.......

Wed - drive to Armour and attend first crop insurance meeting over lunch. At night take out to dinner, the couple that helped me get the first UGUIDE Pheasant camp off the ground (PCL).

Thur - Go to Lake Andes and sign some CRP papers with FSA and maybe stop in and what's happening with FSA and NRCS.

Sat - Head up to Lemmon SD and meet with new camp owners

Sunday - Meeting at Selby with Gunners Haven camp owners

Monday - Meeting at Leola with Old Bank Lodge owners

Should be a little over a 1000 mile round trip. Should have a report when back. Bringing the video camera with in case there is anything worth getting on vid.

Probably be a couple of these in between stops :cheers:

Are You able to get out on the side roads?

I covered 1600 miles on my trip. :eek:

Did I come close to any of Your spots?

South Dakota part.
I entered SD on Highway US 281, US 18 to Winner. From Winner I did the side and back roads all afternoon going North and West. Got to I 90 at Belvidere then East to Murdo, holed up there. Next day North from Draper and East through Ft Pierre NG and the scenic RD to RD 47. I crossed the River at the FT Thompson Dam. I hadn't done that crossing so it was interesting. 47 N to Highmore East to Miller N to Rockham. (lots of pheasants)
With ground blizzard warnings I got on 212 to I 29 and got the heck out of there.
By the time I got to I 29 they were right about the Bizzard, made it though. :cheers:
 
Chris, when that bank building in Leola was actually the town bank I use to examine it when I was a bank examiner with the FDIC. Forget the owners name at the time. Tom something. Great guy, took me fishing on the Missouri River.

Sounds like a great trip and lots to do--if ya go west on 44 toot the horn when you go by the new house a mile or so east of Platte :cheers:

Wayne, I will leave the lodge in Lake Andes and head to Lemmon. Will stay on main roads but will take 83 north through grasslands, Pierre and go west at Pierre and then north to Lemmon. Same travel time from Mpls to lodge as lodge to Lemmon.....5.5 hours.

Trip got off to interesting start when I hit I-90 at Wrthington where a payloader was scooping up dead cows out of the ditch. Apparently a driver rolled his cattle truck. Pretty grimm scene.

Then I arrived at lodge to find a cow calf pair setting up residence in my little shelterbelt. Just born calf. Haven't scene many birds yet but that is never that surprising because they cam be shy at times. Very cool and windy too which keeps them down.

Jim, did you hear me honk when I went by. Quite the trip. Awesome ipen country. First critters to be seens was the lopes. The saw roosters. Not one hen. Wierd. Took a cruise thru the grasslands area and it is huge. It looks a feels like fall up here. Had beers with guy that loads rail cars with oil from the Bakken in Dickinson.

Lots of deer up here too. No EHD like charles mix.

That's good sharptail and Hun country. Lots of good nesting cover for the Ringnecks.:)

Anybody that likes the Native Prairies should visit the Grand River NG. Most of the River Breaks are also true native stuff. :10sign:

Yeah, and I saw a herd of Mulies on the way out of town in the morning. The snow coming thru MN right now cut the rooster road trip short so I will have to go back to Leola and Selby in a couple weeks (RRT Par Deux).

That region is very interesting. Commodity prices is affecting that area too but it might seem to be the right balance of cropland and grassland as upland communities need both.

I wasn't looking for birds but saw some roosters and sharpies.
 
There goes the neighborhood. Have hunted all around that place. I was told at one time the camp belonged to some Rapid City folk, but do not know if that is true. Have spent some time at Smokies in Meadow since 1967!!
