One of many reasons I hunt in the snow

So, winter strom Brutus showed up yesterday in Montana (apparently the Weather Channel has taken to naming winter stroms now). I love to hunt in snow, so I left work early and managed to kill two roosters before dark. I woke up this morning to 12" of snow and still snowing with a temp of about 22 degrees. The dog and I had a good time, we killed several adult roosters and also a few huns.

The photo is of a spur off of one of todays birds 5/8" long. Not the best photo but you get the idea. I would have more photos but I forgot the camera in my excitement to get afield.

Another reason to hunt in the snow is that most hunters stay home. Oh and birds hold very well. You are welcome to add to the list. Cripples can't run away as easily. etc.

Me to I like hunting in bad weather, cause here in Nebraska it keeps the fashion and one hit wounder hunters at home.

I like being able to see tracks in the fresh snow, makes me think I am going see something even if I don't. Have I ever said there is nothing better than a black lab covered with snow in the cattails?

The only thing I like about hunting in the snow is you can really tell what the birds are up to. Tracks, what there feeding on and generally how their doing.
Otherwise I'm a fair weather guy. Frosty mornings, calm winds, sunrises, afternoon high of about 45, sunsets and night time temps of 28.:)

once in awhile i like a snow hunt but once late season hits it get harder & harder to get me into the fields man i hate high winds bone chilling temps when there is snow on the ground being in that all day is hard on ya sometimes you just want the wind to give it a break!!!

but there is not doubt others feel the same way so you do have the fields to your self most the time!!!

did a late season dec. hunt last yr a little snow a lot of wind cold temps & 35 hens flushed not 1 rooster & most them 35 hens came in 1 massive flush at the end of the day on the last walk nearing sun set man that day sucked!!! bad!!! lol

I just love the snow. I love sending the dogs into the cattails and watching roosters pop out of the snow. Has anyone ever seen the birds totally covered by snowdrifts and they just pop right out of the snow? Coolest thing I have ever seen.

+1, saw it yesterday, very cool.

I remember hunting south of Bismarck one time with about 15 inches of fresh light snow. A friend had a good Brittany that would point the snow mounds formed by kochia weeds. Then we would try to kick around it and make the bird flush. What a rush when they would explode up out of the snow. Mostly hens, but it sure was fun. We were so worn out when we got back to the truck that we could hardly walk.
