Youth deer season

My 9 y/o daughter tagged out on Saturday during the youth deer season. She made a perfect heart shot on a young doe. I knew she was a good shot with her new .243 on the paper target, but I didn't know how the excitement of live game might affect her. I guess she has ice in her veins. :D There was very little blood, and it ran into very thick brush. I was really afraid that we would have trouble finding it. But we worked together to track it, and discovered that it probably ran only 40 yards or so.

She wanted to watch me field dress it this time, with the intention of learning how to do it. But she decided that when I get my deer later this year she will probably just sit in the truck while I field dress it. :laugh:

It was a really good day. For those of you that have gone before me, taking your kids hunting, you know how I feel. It's hard to express how good I feel about this experience. I'm proud, but it's so much more than that. I need Kismet or one of you wordsmiths to jump in and explain the emotions of watching your child shoot her first deer...

Anybody else help your youngster tag out last week?
:thumbsup:

You live in fun times my friend! Congratulations to you both! I hope that this only strengthens her desire to be a part of the outdoors and your relationship. My daughter has taken 2 ducks on 2 seperate days and is probably done. My son, that's another story:) I relish the memories of being in the field with them. Make sure to allow her her own path and enjoy each step she takes in your sacred places!

Both my kids have tagged out this year, and I was sitting right next to them. My 15 year old is about to age out of youth season and probably doesn't need my help. He has killed a deer every fall since he was 10. Nevertheless, I still enjoy sitting in the blind with him. He shot a spike last Sunday evening.

My 13 year old, on the other hand, shot his first this year. He'll never admit to it out loud, but he's a little recoil and noise shy. He's a big kid, probably 5'-8" and 160#, so it doesn't make much sense, but every kid is different. He's spent time in the blind every year since he was 10, and until this year he's always declined at the last moment. His was a doe. It too ran off into the woods and we were concerned that he had missed. I never found a blood trail, but we certainly found the deer. It was a great morning on Saturday.

We went out and despite a couple misses on a little 6 point, we had a great time! Just the two of us, eating donuts and cheeseburgers and shakes and all kinds of junk food in the truck, telling stories, laughing, etc....
We even found time to run a box of shells through his little single shot 20 gauge and he shot his first dove out of the air!
I just wish we had more days in the field.

Congrats to all the dad's who took their kids. :thumbsup::10sign: Mine stepsons were with their dad that weekend so no early deer for them. I am out today to try it with the bow.

Thanks guys. I found out she has been bragging to her little buddies at school about it, and that gave me a warm, fuzzy feeling.:D She told me about a couple of her classmates who also got deer during the youth season.

There was a parent night at the school last night, and some of the other kids' moms asked my wife if it was really true that our daughter had shot a deer.
My knee-jerk reaction, was "great, lemme hear about how killing bambi is a sin...:rolleyes:." But just the opposite was the case. It sounds like they were impressed and some of the other moms even wanted to see the pictures on FB.

There is hope for the future. :laugh:

Nice work, Toad. You done good.

I like your choice of caliber and your approach to preparing with knowledge, as well as practice for your daughter. One of those great reinforcements for life: "If you prepare, you can succeed." Translates to almost every other part of living.

:D:thumbsup::D
