Yellow lab makes me sneeze!

My yellow lab pup makes me sneeze and itch. She is only 6 1/2 weeks old. I am scared I might be allergic to her but I've never been allergic to a dog before. Has anyone experienced this with the soft new puppy hair? I am curious if maybe this will change when she gets her adult hair or if I should try another option.
Also, to all the yellow lab owners out there: How much do you notice your dog shedding in the house? I've been a brit guy my whole life. This is my first yellow lab and I am also not to excited about cleaning up hair, however, it'll be nice to have a lower energy dog for once.
 
I've never had any issues with yellow's and puppy hair bugging me... As far as the hair goes, good luck!! lol Mine sheds like no bodies business. It doesn't matter what I've done, special food, furminators etc... Still doesn't seem to put a dent in the hair.

And your expecting your Lab to be a "Low energy" dog?? well good luck! :D
 
Wingshot, you will never get a dog that does shed some. Some dogs do shed less than others. A dogs coat is constantly changing to adjust to the seasons of the year. Therefore you'll never get rid of the hair loss........Bob

Better get used to shedding:)! Not to many people would consider a Lab a low energy dog, without excercise and mental stimulation Labs will destroy every shoe, slipper, chair leg they can get their teeth on.

6 1/2 weeks is awful (extremmely) young for a pup to leave the litter. Be careful and be prepared to work on social skills as well as possible insecurity issues.

Sorry for being such a dark cloud. I am a lab guy and I wish you years of enjoyment with your new buddy. Just be prepared!

If you have never had a Lab before you are in for a huge surprise. Despite their shorter hair Labs must shed more than any other dog. I had one yellow Lab sandwiched between Springers and Brittanys. I use to swear that Lab had to shed half it's weight in hair every week. My current Brittanys don't shed a fraction of what that Lab did.

:laugh: :laugh: :laugh: Some individual labs may mello over the years, but you have a ways to go! Labs love to please and long for your companionship if you treat them right. If you train them and set up guidelines for them, you will not find a more loyal partner. Sometimes when I'm sitting downstairs watching tv (trying to get some alone time), my "boy" will come running downstairs just looking to wrestle with daddy, just as often he would still like to crawl up on my lap for a nap. As far as the shedding goes? I would recommend a Dyson...you'll need it!

I agree with Gatzby, 6 1/2 weeks is too young to have away from the litter. Dad always said bring them home on the 49th day (taken from Richard Wolters). Hope you don't have an allergy, I'd hate for you to settle on a lesser breed. :D :D :D just kidding to all of you non-lab owners!!
 
I have two labs, 12 and 1 year old, yellow and black.I have enough dog hair in the house to make two more dogs.
6 1/2 weeks is awful young and i agree with others on that. I brought the yellow home at 10 weeks and she has been a perfect dog for the past 12 years.
I brought the black home at 7 weeks old and lets say it wasnt smooth sailing.I can honestly say i will never have a black lab again, only yellows.
Back to the subject at hand, right now the yellow is shedding ALOT.
 
I had some allergy issues with my lab pup and just got over it or used to it as time went on. Not sure if it was real bad allergies though, more of just annoyance and some itchy eyes. Took me about a month to get through it. I had a similar experience with dog number 2, allergies for a few weeks and mostly OK now. Brushing helps.
 
People can develop allergies as we get older. Has it been awhile since your last dog passed away? Just thinking maybe if it has been awhile since you've had a dog in the house you might be re-acclimating to a dog and hopefully nothing more serious.
 
My wife had some allergies to dogs, so when we got Mojo she started taking Claritin. Then she just started to wean herself off of it and now takes none (5 months later). A thought - generic Claritin is cheap and it sure beats the symptoms!
 
I was around dogs my whole life and my allergies didnt kick up until I was around 23. It totally sucks because I love dogs. Labs drive my allergies nuts. +1 on Chuckles advice. I take Walitin from walgreens and one a day is usually enough to keep the worst of the symptoms away. If you really need to the doctor can give you some nasal spray that will work wonders.
