I hunt around my home, within 100 miles most of the time. I could have hunted yesterday and today, but it’s raining and I’m retired so there is tomorrow. Around here I go to see my dogs work! My 3 year old GSP has had a great year-so far, some really stylish points on pheasants and the more she goes the better she looks!
I go out of state at least 3-4 times per year and I just got back from opening weekend in Iowa. How do you put a price on hunting and visiting with a friend and his family that you’ve know for 42 years? His son just turned 40 and I’ve known him since he was born and his oldest daughter will graduate HS this year. It’s more of a reunion and I’ve come to the realization that my buddy may not live that much longer, his health is not the best.
I only shot one rooster this year in Iowa but with food, fuel, a couple bottles of good whiskey plus 16 hours on the road, that rooster cost me a minimum of $600-$750 AND I didn’t even bring it home!
I’m going to SD next week to see another good friend to hunt with him. I consider the time I get to be with him precious since his health isn’t the best either. That trip will cost $1000 or more since my wife is driving up later to hunt with us for a few days.
And then there are the dogs, $50 a week for dog food plus vet bills, and the dog’s electronics, GPS tracker and e-collars. And guns, clothing, On-X subscription, gifts to landowners and everything else I have that makes this sport enjoyable.
Upland hunting is my favorite hobby and long ago I learned you can’t put a price on something you really enjoy!
