Why we hunt

Yesterday as myself and a good friend finished up a evening hunt just north of the house, we had time to reflect on just how good life can be. We had hunted right up until sunset following his two dogs thru the tall grass and several food plots finding nine roosters scattered about, wish I could tell of limits taken but poor shooting and the not being in the right place at the right time was our excuse. Maybe it was just roosters being roosters but it was not important that they fooled us again.

As we stood watching the sun slowly sink below the horizon the roosters started to cackle all around us and they kept it up until it got dark, it was one of those very special moments when time, place and circumstance came together to produce a total feeling that things just don't get any better than this.

My thoughts exactly Jim.

I'm hunting new ground today. It's hot out. Too hot to risk my dogs unless we're hunting round water. There's a lot of birds and it's hard waiting for the temps to cool down a bit before starting up again.

I just took a little walk around an old farm building site as I like to look at all the old machinery. As I was walking. Two different roosters got up none too happy about having their afternoon siesta disturbed. No dog. No gun. No problem. Just enjoy being here!

The memories made are what it is all about.

Hunting is about being in the right place at right place at the right time. Crap happens. LOL:thumbsup:

I remember an end of day hunt maybe 8 years ago. Me and my dog Bean went into a small slew...... Birds started flying in and landing all around us. She sat at heel we watched 25-35 birds land all around us. By the time the show was over it was past shooting hours. Never shot once and it was still a top 3 hunt. SDJIM thanks for helping me remember that night.

There's some old saying about being a fisherman for all of one's life and finally figuring out it was never the fish you were after. Those moments you describe are what we are really after. Good post!

Great post....

I have had many GREAT hunts where we hardly shot our guns! It's about much more than just a limit, that is for darn sure!

Love that attitude Jim. It's easy to get caught up in the reasons we're not out there and forget about the real reasons we're there. It's times like that one you shared with us that reminds me why I do this to begin with. Good stuff.

Great post Jim. Your friend is very fortunate to have a friend like you, and I"m sure he valued that time and those sights and sounds as much as you did. That's the stuff memories and made of.
