why do some of you hunt?

for me some of my greatest memories of hunts were times that we shot very few or no birds (pheasant or waterfowl) at all. i know people that are just miserable no matter who they are with unless limits are shot. for me shooting a bird is just a perk it's nice to enjoy the people, dogs, weather and cover.

glad to here it

amen to that. Enjoy every minute cuz it dont last long. Lifes to short to keep score. If im outdoors, im happy.

Don't get me wrong, I like to shoot a few birds.
But the reason I hunt is to spend time with the dogs outdoors, watching them do what they were breed to do.

I have hunted Prairie Chicken 3 time this season and not pulled the trigger once.

Its been fun, but it would be nice to actually have PC show up during a PC hunt :D

Those killing days are long behind me!!! When I was a teenager it was all about filling your limit !!! Man, that was a long time ago!!! Could care less these days!!! Just want to be out there doing what I am doing!!! As long as I am with good people and dogs , I am having a blast!!! Birds are a bonus these days!!!!:cheers:

have you ever been in the middle of a big flush of birds and just stood there;)? to watch the birds trying to escape and the dogs going wild the total chaos of it all is a lot of fun to watch :D. you should all try that some time it's more fun than u'd think:thumbsup:. i've done this several times even while hunting in groups. it's the closest thing to catch and release you can do while hunting.

That happened to me the first time I went to S.D. The guy who owned the place was screaming at me like a lunatic to SHOOT,SHOOT! I just smiled at him and said: Chill out. I am here for 3 days, I have plenty of time to shoot.:D

Dogs, friends, and inner peace. Probably a sense of freedom and adventure too.

Nothing clears your mind like time outdoors. And nothing makes lifelong memories like a road-trip with hunting buddies.

I think at times hunting can also be exciting in a way that you can't duplicate in any other activity.

Getting game is only one reason to go. It is an important part, but still only part of the big picture.

And I'm with you, Setternut! I'm ready to see some Prairie Chickens too!

I have no problem passing up shots to give others a chance, like newbies or if a friend is along and I want to let them have the shot... But I guess I am not as evolved as you, sir. If it is pheasant season, pheasants are flushing, my game bag is empty, and the shot is 'mine',,, nobody will have to tell me to shoot.:D

I got back into hunt after about a 10 year layoff, because my son wanted to hunt. We went out and got a new dog, before we started. He took his safey course and now we hunt most most weekends. He loves it, the dog loves it..... I just like to watch him smile and the dogs work...Of course I'm sattled with cleaning a mess of birds when we are done. But thats what fathers do...:D

Getting out in the country with the dog and a friend or two is the best part. Working together, enjoying the open country, and maybe bagging a bird is a fantastic experience.

Ah Chris...after hunting with you last year - you are the consummate hunter! You do it so well, it's fun to be with you. Maybe we can collaborate again this year.

Jon

I just like the whole adventure, the camping in remote areas, camp meals, the pups, night sounds on the prairies and badlands. I don't mind leaving the shotgun behind and the long hikes. Get a few colorful wild birds is nice.

why thank you jonnyb:thumbsup:. i want to go back to s.d. in mid dec let me know if this works for you. maybe we could get dakotazeb to go along also.

Passion for the breed I love and watching them grow and work. The thrill of the harves from our hard work together is the icing on the top. Beats sitting on a bar stool. And ya gotta enjoy something you do, lifes short. Ya have to do what you can while you can. Not much else gives me that kind of satisfaction I guess.

To be in fine country with finer dogs swatting the occassional fine bird out of the air and recognizing the fine people one meets along the way.

Cause when I bury a dog,I don't have to think about that day I could have hunted with him and chose to watch football instead.

I grew up in a hunting family and it's in our blood. We've had setters since I was born and I love the dogs. I love watching them work the field/woods and wind. Like poetry in motion. I also enjoy shooting my share of birds and can be frustrated at a lack of bird contacts, but shooting limits is not what it's all about for me. There's nothing better than taking a break on a nice fall day, at the tailgate, to give the dogs a breather after hunting and getting some good work on birds. Good hunting, good friends, enjoying what God has given us.

One brother works too much and his wife is a bitch [sorry, call it like I see it]. When he does get to go he's out of control. Can't stop for a sandwich or a drink 'cause you're "cutting into my hunting time". Pretty funny now that he has a young boot licker Golden pup that he took in the woods for the first time, shot at a bird and the dog ran for the truck, never having been introduced to gunfire properly. I have a hard time hunting with him. Our youngest brother is spoiled and is frustrated if he doesn't get a lot of shooting. He won't go to SD or ND because one time the hunting was poor and it's too far to go if he's not about guaranteed to shoot daily limits. Both guys miss the point, in my opinion.

because I "get it" some folks will never "get it" which is fine I hate crowds.
