Who's been quail hunting?

I made it out today w/ a fellow UPH member. Yet another stand up individual from this fine site. I know quail huntin' just ain't what it used to be, but it's still worth doing IMO. We each had a place in mind so we visited both places. Managed to kick up 3 coveys and put 7 in the bag. Probably could've worked 2 of the covies over a bit harder, but they'll have a better chance of surviving harsh winter weather b/c we didn't. The first covey was a smart one and escaped us w/ ease.

The fleet has developed some terrible manors. At least one of my dogs refuses to honor and 2 more of them are getting jumpy as a result. A discussion for another day I suppose.

V-john thanks for meeting up with me today. This was my first experience hutning behind Vizslas (sp?) and it was a treat.

yep, I've been quail hunting. 2 guys, 3 coveys, 9 birds in a short period of time. Could have had more, 3 from each covey was enough.

Saw 2 coveys today with 0 in the bag both on WIHA. The first was on edge of milo no more than 100ft from the truck and my dog was busy chasing 20 or so turkeys flying away and I walked through the middle of the covey. The second covey was under a cedar on a fence row and flushed easily into the best looking private CRP.

I'm glad to see some vizslak (plural for vizsla) at work pointing some quail. I have two myself and love their devotion to the family and the pursuit of my favorite upland game. Not to exclude the Brits, they look like they are handling backing just fine.

Scks

We have got up more coveys this year than any other. Most have been around cut bean fields but yesterday we saw three next to milo. Now that the farmers in this area plant more than wheat I think that helps the quail.

KB, were you guys hunting WIHAs?

I haven't been out for quail yet this year. I have been wasting way too much time on deer hunting. I think next year I will just buy half a cow to fill the freezer and then I can bird hunt all I want.

i have been able to get out around lake perry a few times this year and have actually seen quit a few coveys..im very suprised at how many birds ive seen in these coveys after the weather we had last year.

1 state public area and 1 WIHA parcel. Both held birds. Get out there before they close the "gates."

The 2 britts are the eldest of my fleet. They still do a good job of backing most times. My 4yo GWP is the one I'm most concerned about. He points and holds well, he just doesn't want to respect the other dogs. This in turn is making my 1.5yo GSP want to do the same thing. The GSP backed a couple times yesterday, but ran in a couple times too. It is frustrating, especially when I'm running thm with well-behaved dogs.

The second pic is from a week ago.

The quail numbers are definately up. I haven't been out one day this year without finding at least one covey, with a high number of 6 coveys. It's encouraging.
KB, quail hunting is where it's at for good close action. One of my favorite things is flushing a covey that explodes in waves.
I have the opposite problem when it comes to honoring, if mine sees a dog stopped he'll stop for a second until send him. He hasn't had a legit honor since Holloween weekend in ND, mostly because he's had the find or been the only dog. Last Saturday when it was just myself, a friend, and Ranger I was thinking it sure would be nice to see a good honor.
I suspect you GWP wants to be the one finding the birds, too much competition.

quail

Yep. Quail are still good in some parts of Texas. I was in the panhandle, and it was very strong. It was still warm, and those little suckers were track stars.

Went to SE Ks today for a quail hunt. All private land and did not see a single quail. Great looking land with fencerows and crp. Very disappointing! Hopefully they come back soon.

The SE has been a major disappointment for several years it seems. There must be too many predators, or they've been getting too much rain in early Spring.

Went out this morning on some public ground around the house here and moved one of the biggest coveys I have ever seen. I think the covey was so big it even shocked the dogs as they just stood there looking at me after I walked in to flush the birds. Went to another place and was able to move 2 more covey along with flock of turkeys that sat in the crp for the dogs to point, I hate it when they do that. All in all in my short season quail numbers around here seem to be up a bit. Hopefully they continue to rebound throughout the state over the next few years.

SE KS is where I hunted last and was pleasantly surprised we found 3 coveys. Think that's a good sign they might be coming back. All were in the fence rows surrounded by corn. Had to take our time and let the dog do the work. Ran one coyote out of a waterway.

Thanks for coming with!

I've been on Xmas break with no internet, just saw this.

I had a good time, your boys were outstanding and your dogs real nice as well. Thanks for the pics!
